usually crossword bird answers are limited to “TERN” and “HERON” but yesterdays’s NYT crossword featured the clue “Black bird,” answered by one of the all-time greatest birds, the ANIs, so here’s a short ANI appreciation thread (here are groove-billed anis)
Anis are cuckoos. Cuckoos are famous for being awkward and elusive, but Anis decided that being elusive was too difficult and just went with awkward. different field guides describe them as “crashing around,” “not graceful,” “disheveled,” and “floppy.” (smooth-billed below)

so first they find a cone that's ready to pluck food out of - not so open that it's dropped all of its seeds, not too closed that they can't get to the food. then they slip the tip of their top beak in like the below:
