How @JoeBiden used a tax avoidance technique to get around paying $500,000 in taxes. A thread. 1/ washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/joe-bi… @JoeBiden In 2017 and 2018, Joe and Jill Biden ran $13 million of profits through a Subchapter-S corporation, allowing them to avoid payment of $500,000 in Social Security and Medicare tax. .@nytimes on somehow obtaining @realDonaldTrump tax returns: "Some will raise questions about publishing the president’s personal tax information..." 1/ nytimes.com/2020/09/27/us/… @nytimes @realDonaldTrump "But the [SCOTUS] has repeatedly ruled that the [1A] allows the press to publish newsworthy information that was legally obtained by reporters even when those in power fight to keep it hidden. That powerful principle of the [1A] applies here." 2/ nytimes.com/2020/09/27/us/…

What should people think about the @nytimes Trump tax story? A thread. 1/

nytimes.com/interactive/20… Let’s start with the obvious: while the reporters and newspaper are held harmless by the First Amendment to the Constitution, whoever leaked these tax returns is likely guilty of multiple felonies. 2/

I disagree with almost everything my friend @joeantos wrote in this piece. A thread! 1/

aei.org/economics/dont… @joeantos People don't choose to work or not to work based on accrued quarters of Social Security eligibility. I suspect the number of people in the world who even understand how this works don't hit triple figures. 2/

The government needs to leave freelancers, gig economy workers, and their customers alone. A thread on my @dcexaminer piece today. 1/ washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/why-ca… @dcexaminer The gig economy and freelance jobs have radically transformed the ways we travel, we eat, and we do routine household chores. It's made our lives better in many ways, and created flexible work options for millions. 2/ washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/why-ca…

A brief thread on the @kpomerleau piece on full deductibility of business meals.

TL;DR is that I am in favor of the proposal.

1/

aei.org/economics/leav… @kpomerleau The most important point made by @kpomerleau is that "meals and entertainment can be an ordinary and necessary business expense." Given that, the proper response is regulating this expense, not limiting it arbitrarily or repealing it. 2/

Five hours (door to door) in order to get a simple Covid test. Had to fill out duplicative paperwork four ways for a five person family. Needless check boxes like BP and height measurements further delayed tests. Do better, @MedStarHealth. People are trying to play by the rules. Rhode Island has a 14 day quarantine unless you get a negative Covid test no more than 72 hours before entering the state. We need to have a much easier, more family-friendly, local, and above all fast testing process.

Just swab my damned nostrils and get me out of there.

Today, millions of small business owners are going to have to pay their 2019 tax bill, pay their Q1 2020 tax bill, and pay their Q2 2020 tax bill. All on one day.

This all could have been delayed into next year, helping the recovery. Thanks for nothing, @stevenmnuchin1. The Treasury Secretary has full authority in a national emergency period to delay all tax payments by up to one year. That’s why these taxes are due today—they were delayed from the spring to now. They should have been delayed further. $500 billion or more will go to the IRS.

RI has the 3rd highest per capita number of Covid cases and 5th highest per capita number of deaths.

The governor sent Covid patients into nursing homes, accounting for most of the deaths.

But tell me more how it’s doing better than FL, AZ, and TX. politico.com/news/magazine/… Why do the Rhode Island numbers look so much better today? Much like New York and New Jersey, they let the virus kill the low hanging fruit already. There aren’t enough first tier targets for the virus to kill because they are already dead.

My latest in the @dcexaminer. Congressional Dems will try to use the Covid phase four package to muscle through pieces of the Green New Deal. washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/democr… @dcexaminer The most straightforward way for Democrats to enact the Green New Deal if they take unified control of the federal government in 2021 is through the tax code. That's because Schumer could use budget reconciliation with a simple majority Senate vote. washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/democr…

In my latest for the @dcexaminer, I argue that @stevenmnuchin1 should delay a multi-hundred billion dollar gusher of July tax payments into next year. He has full authority to do so. It's insurance against a double dip recession. It's good politics. washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/delay-… There is a difference between the tax FILING deadline and the various tax PAYMENT deadlines. The IRS will not be moving the former. The latter is very much still in play. 2/ washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/delay-…
