80 years ago today, the US dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, a Catholic hub in Japan. The bomb killed 2/3 Catholics in the city.

A survivor of the blast, Takashi Nagai, was named a "Servant of God," the first step on the path to sainthood.

Here's his incredible story 🧵 Image Born in Japan in 1908, Nagai was raised under the influence of both Confucius and Shinto teachings and considered himself an atheist.

The woman who would become his wife was from a family that helped lead the underground church during the Edo period of persecution. Image

"Our number one responsibility is compassion to our fellow Americans"

A short 🧵 A common objection from catholics who oppose robust border security is that charity demands we welcome anyone who comes seeking a better life.

But charity does not demand that we treat everyone the same.

This is intuitive. A mother should love her child more than a stranger.
