extracts from the shownotes for tonight's podcast:

salivating over every remaining sentence,

we're all stupid and lazy,

a Serbian knight,

the love interest gets heart stabbed,

a big drunk dummy,

a big dumb oaf,

hawk nosed pantherish condor wings, very Riders Of Rohan,

a chestful of head,

the cur has pups,

our Germanic dumb guy,

these are philosophical stories about how to be,

leaning in to what makes it unique vs. leaning into the surface details,

this is the Brotherhood without Banners in Khitai,

Podcast listener asks in an email if we have ever done (or maybe ever will do a Terry Pratchett book)

here's my answer: "No, I haven't pracheted. Paul [ @PrinceJvstin ] said something recently, in a DM about whether I was right about not doing NINE PRINCES IN AMBER, by Zelazny.

And that got me to thinking: There are a lot of books that aren't really meant to be thought about, rather just enjoyed

Dreamt a lost friend returned to my life, but was troubled by dark thots. I took him to get help, but we were waylaid along the way by an old nemeis with old nemesisism. South of certain street we were forced into underground but I dragged my despairing friend ahead. itwas there I was forced into combat with the nemesis, and was challenged with the lance. I didn't want to kill but needed a defense. The onslaught was unrelenting, and so finally I impaled my old foe through the shoulder. He laughed, but did not die. I thrust the harder and the shoulder

Dr David H. Keller delivers a bit of a dud in THE HIDDEN MONSTER, first published in ORIENTAL STORIES, Summer 1982

Prof. Charles Quarley takes a sabbatical and goes undercover as a "Chinaman" in Chinatown to investigate a new Chinese religion - the worship of a "Hidden Monster" Image Though a bit of a misfire, in my view, I do like the setup, what with the professor eating a lot of carrots to make his skin yellow, and going undercover as a killer, he also joins a Tong!

the STAR TREK episode "The Paradise Syndrome" is another visit to a space version of Tahiti - an alluring, enticing, and heavenly planet where peace and love rule and where sexual repression and alienating labour are wholly absent MCCOY: What's the matter, Jim?

KIRK: What? Oh, nothing. It's just so peaceful, uncomplicated. No problems, no command decisions. Just living.

MCCOY: Typical human reaction to an idyllic natural setting. Back in the twentieth century, we referred to it as...

from an email about the latest SFFaudio Podcast:

"Thanks so much; I used to read 'Boys Life'

You are right, Jesse - Heinlein's personality (self reliant non specialist) is a Boy Scout's mentality ... [re the] Population Bomb-you make me chuckle; wouldn't it be nice if a book could make tremendous changes possible. That point might make a good podcast; which books caused significant changes? Missing = black people? It is amazing to me that

yesterday we recorded a podcast on THE GODDESS OF ATVATABAR, an 1892 HOLLOW EARTH novel by William R. Bradshaw

I found it really cool, with lots of fun SCIENCE FICTION ideas, near the start and end, and also a tremendous wasteland of spiritualism masturbation in the middle subtitled:

BEING THE
HISTORY OF THE DISCOVERY
OF THE
INTERIOR WORLD
AND
CONQUEST OF ATVATABAR

it clearly informs Edgar Rice Burroughs' AT THE EARTH'S CORE, but with sexually frustrated preistesses in place of psychic lesbian dinosaur ladies Image

Dreamt I was in a ferry ship in the North Sea headed to Britain at night we took a meal during a storm and as we sat down to eat it the ship started rolling, when k looked out the window there was a massive whirlpool forming. There was a wave of panic among the passengers but I was more worried about finding my car on the vehicle decks. What deck did we park on? What did the car look like? I didn't know. while the ship listed from side to side in the storm various carts & bags rolled down the aisles. Somehow this reminded me of the high grass wasteland
