I spent Eid in Kashgar Thursday. It was busy,noisy, and honestly, it looked like a lot of people were having fun. State media loved it. Zhao Lijian, Hu Xijin and many others took it as an example of how free and happy Uyghur people are
But I was also there the day before, with @eefjerammeloo and @GillSabrie. Some people were heading to the square. I asked a Uyghur dude what it was about. He had no idea and said sthg like "the lingdao (boss) made us come". An hour later they started dancing, without enthusiasm

Il y a un mois, je suis allé au Xinjiang. Le temps d'un après midi, j'ai pu aller voir l'appartement vide d'un contact en exil. Sa mère est en camp de "rééducation". Comme UN MILLION de ouïgours. Soit presque 10% de la population ouïgoure dans des camps lemonde.fr/long-format/ar…
J'ai pu discuter avec des voisins. Un vieux Han de 80 ans qui nous a invités à boire un verre. Et des ouïgours terrifiés à l'idée de parler à un journaliste étranger qui voulaient plutôt abréger la conversation. Et puis, quand on quittait la résidence, une dame nous rattrape.
