Things filmed inside can be difficult to geolocate, but believe there's enough here to make a good case for it being here:

📌33.514013774282404, 36.23814838466553 First thing is that the roof pattern matches, two large sections of sloped roofs that meet at a pointed middle section x 2.

I was looking at telegram groups and channels encouraging unrest.

Found one user trying to organise transport, and advertising fireworks for sale for use by those turning up.

I found out who he is.

1/?news.sky.com/story/inside-t… The user’s handle matched an anonymous telegram channel that mostly advertised cannabis products before the mass stabbing in Southport.

On telegram he directs people to a new channel, which links the aforementioned one with his handle.

Looked at the lead up to the Southport riot, the role of the far right, and how tensions were raised on social media.

Worked on this with @Chesh @michelle_inez and @saywhatsaywah

1/?

news.sky.com/story/southpor… @marcowenjones provided us with data scraped before a lot of people deleted their posts falsely naming the suspect and misidentifying him as a migrant.

It shows a few key accounts played a major role in spreading these narratives. Image

Quick thread on how we went about verifying the location of Israel's strike on Rafah last night.

1/? Filmed at night, a lot of the footage lacks immediately identifiable features.

An exception is this sign, visible in footage and legible in a matching photograph. Identifying this means this daytime footage showing the same sign can be used to help geolocate.

Wrote about the outsized effect of US and UK social media users on debates concerning migration in Ireland

Pulled 30 days of Twitter data using social media monitoring tool Talkwalker, was interested in discussion of unrest in Newtownmountkennedy.

1/?news.sky.com/story/how-inte… First I looked at the term Newtownmountkennedy. The distinctive name makes it easy to search.

Unsurprisingly, mentions spiked the day of the unrest on April 25, and peaked the following day. Image

Have seen a lot of discussion around the timing of when these sites were used for burials.

This is what we found putting together this coverage with @_BvdM and @Chesh .

1/?

news.sky.com/story/israel-b… We looked at three burial sites.

One positioned along the southern perimeter wall, one in the eastern corner of the compound, and one positioned just north of a paved driveway. Image

Like many journalists and researchers, have had to work with quite a lot of graphic footage and images in recent months.

Not an expert, but have listed some pointers I've found useful on how to manage exposure when working with this kind of content.

1/? Depending on what you're doing, it might not be necessary view graphic content itself, at least not initially.

By going into Chrome's settings, you can disable images. This prevents them being displayed when you visit a website. Works when viewed through the browser rather than the app.Image

In the last few months an issue I've seen continually cited is the difficulty geolocating images/footage from Gaza

Lack of streetview, low quality satellite images and other issues aren't unique to Gaza, so thought I'd list a few workarounds to get more info in these cases

1/? Sites like Getty Images can be a good place to look for more images and context

Particularly in conflict zones, there's a non-zero chance events will have been photographed and uploaded to image libraries

Good example here from @ChrisOsieck

Really interesting reporting on the international far right's role in stoking anti-migrant sentiment in Ireland

Decided to look at some geographical data associated with three of the hashtags that picked up most traction in these spaces since the attack

1/? I chose to look at #.IrelandIsFull, #.IrelandBelongsToTheIrish, and #.IrishLivesMatter.

Used the social media monitoring tool BrandWatch to pull mentions over time, and geographical data for posts that have this available. Covers X, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, etc

While this footage looks weird, it doesn't show Ukrainians carrying 'props.'

The quality of the video is really bad, so had a root around for the original footage.

1/? It's obviously taken from Sky News, so checked their Youtube. While it looks more like insulation or something, the big screen format still makes it hard to tell for sure.
