आज से 25-30 साल पहले कोई साईं का नाम तक नहीं जानता था, तब शिर्डी सिर्फ एक खाली गाँव था जहाँ साईं की एक कब्र थी जहाँ पर 1972 में एक मूर्ति लगा दी गयी ताकि साईं की मार्केटिंग करके नया धंधा चमकाया जाए। तब साईं के भी एक्का दुक्का मंदिर होते थे, 1972 में जिस साईं कि कब्र के पास कोई मूर्ति नहीं थी वहां पर अब मूर्ति लगा कर धन बटोरने और हिन्दूओ को सेकुलर बनाने का षड्यंत्र चलने लगा, उनका एक ही उद्देश्य था कि किसी तरह से साईं हर हिन्दू के घर में पहुँच जाए क्यूंकि इससे एक तो मुसलमानो को लोग अच्छा समझेंगे और दूसरा साईं के कारण राम मंदिर आन्दोलन धीमा पड़ जायेगा, दुर्भाग्य से उनकी योजना सफल हो गयी

लेकिन 1990 के बाद चले राममंदिर आन्दोलन को कमजोर करने और हिन्दुओ को भटकाने के लिए ही तब साईं का प्रचार सबसे अधिक जोरदार तरीके से शुरू हुआ था ।
