Do you study history to understand the shifts that are about to come?

This morning I'm playing around with "what will the world look like in a decade?"

Back in the late 1980s I had many arguments with people who thought we would always be using DOS.

When I started my career there were many who thought that, back when the graphical user interfaces that were new, back in the 1980s, were a waste of time.

I had many arguments. Many companies, like Borland and Wordperfect, were run by people like that. We know now that was the wrong way to run companies, they are gone because of their belief systems and attempts to stick to the past.

It ignores that humans change, even when they tell you they never will. All my career I've done human research, studying this resistance to change. Bill Gates told me I had no business value when I told him to buy all of Web 2.0. He couldn't see that humans were about to change.

Let's dig in. What will humans be doing in 10 years?

1. In a decade most people will not be driving. What will we do instead?

2. In a decade most people will have robots in their businesses and probably their homes.

3. In a decade we won't be looking at 2D monitors much anymore.

4. In a decade we will be using a ton of brain/computer interfaces to work and play.

5. In a decade AI will be making us all more productive, and, even, happier. It will be reporting our news. It will be running our businesses. It will be helping us with our health. It will be helping us build. It will help us design new things, new products, new ideas, new lifestyles, new experiences.

6. In a decade we will still be needed to work, but on new things that are hard to imagine today.

7. In a decade we will have dozens of virtual beings in our lives. And your AI will bring new ones into your life depending on your goals. Want to learn Spanish? A new group will show up that are different than the group that will show up if you want to learn Chemistry.

8. In a decade new brain/computer interfaces will be here, and will merge humans with AIs in many ways.

9. In a decade our corporate structures will change to be a hybrid of humans and AIs working together.

10. In a decade a robot will attend our city council meetings and report to us about what's going on inside.

11. In a decade we won't use applications, like we do today on our iPhones. We will have a singular user interface. On Star Trek you just said "computer do this" and it did. Star Trek will be real in a decade.

12. In a decade we will have armies of robots and drones moving around our cities doing everything from deliveries to giving tours to tourists.

13. In a decade we still will have artists and storytellers, but they will be assisted by AIs to help make that art, and tell that story. AI's will gather other AIs who will warn the humans that someone is telling an interesting story.

14. In a decade AIs will still be asking humans for assistance. "Hey human can you get a better view of the house that's on fire across the street?"

15. In a decade AIs are assisting humans in coming up with new medical and material breakthroughs. Even designing new computing architectures, whether Quantum, or silicon, or biological, or a hybrid of all three or even something even newer.

I'm already living this way, always talking with Grok. "Hey Grok, what am I missing?"

Grok has a huge advantage for me.

I spend a lot of time in my Tesla.

Grok will control the experience. No other will get close. APIs not available to all. Distribution matters.

When Cybercab hits your street in 2027 you all will be forced to use Grok and you all happily will join me. The experience inside will be better than any other. Because of Grok.

And you all will use it. Been interviewing @Waymo customers in San Francisco. They all say driving is dead. So does OpenAI matter? Not as long as they are close intelligence wise.

And I can see how X provides another moat.

A new AI Application World has arrived

Everyone can now make their own AI Application, even me!

You know I’m not a programmer, even though I worked for years at a programming magazine back in the 1990s where I learned a few things (that really set the stage for me to become a strategist at Microsoft).

When I first learned TV the rule was “never aim at lights.” It would damage the tubes. 1980.

My iPhone needs 30 minutes or more to make a NeRF. It is making one on @LumaLabsAI.

Waiting for it to show up reminds me of printing color photos done with Cibachrome. Took a while but always blew me away when I pulled it out of the tube. This was back in 1979. I went straight to color in my high school photo class and dove right in.

I was alone to do so.

Watching a Polaroid develop is always a great joy.

I was listening to KGO Radio in SF when ABC News broke in to say he died.

ABC news, back then, didn't care about Twitter. So didn't post the news until 10 minutes later. This is a huge hint to how Apple works.

It doesn't call "little people" like me. In fact, I'm on a "do not talk to him" list there, for many reasons.

It calls the huge media outlets first.

Twitter is over.

I've been on it 16 years. So feel sad tonight.

But I'm staying here. Why?

The rebirth is gonna be something if @elonmusk can find the server space for it over in that datacenter he has 1/3rd of (it's one of those that's millions of sq ft). AI can do the authentication of people much better than the checkmark system. Elon will be proven right to shoot it in the head. The same way Steve Jobs shot Flash in the head. He was right too,

The $8? It'll soon be a badge of honor. We stuck around through a big fire.

Do you dream of micro oleds? I do.

I saw them long ago in a Cork, Ireland-based Lab that Zuckerberg bought.

So bright. Change color so fast. Designed for ends of fiber lines going across Atlantic. Pretty sure that the team I met is still doing that.

But in Silicon Valley... New small screens are appearing out of labs. A friend is building a wearable that will have one of these micro oled screens. It looks like a crystal compared to any other screen I've seen.

Can be extremely bright. So much that you probably will never see maximum.

The future of audio is Silicon speakers.

Yesterday I was invited to hear the future of audio on a visit to xmems.com

This Silicon wafer has hundreds of speakers on it. Yesterday they showed me these used in headphones, augmented reality glasses and more.

Wow.🧵 Here is my friend Jeff Stevens listening to them. He was a recording engineer and is the hardest audiophile I know.

He and I were blown away.

The headphones have way better sound than the new Airpod Pros. More accurate and better spatial audio.

A friend who is building the augmented reality technology that is coming next year put it this way.

“It isn’t that next year’s headset will beat the best 4K screens, like the one you have.”

“It is that your couch is in the middle of a sphere that has 20 of those screens.” My screen runs $5,500 at BestBuy right now.

One people figure this out they will line up to buy one at $3,000.

The audio also improves at a huge rate, he told me. Every voxel has a virtualized speaker.

Just thinking the world is way too negative about wearing glasses.

Back at Augmented World Expo @magicleap showed us all what working together in them to solve a big problem could feel like. Forest fires they showed me. Way more productive than we are doing today. I can’t see without mine.

The @Tesla robot, when revealed in September, will blow everyone away because of the simulator it has.

I got a tour of a top secret robot lab in Silicon Valley.

Here is a small taste.

It sees in Neural Radiance Fields and has other mind blowing tech inside its humanish form. More on the company that is building it, @GiantAITalks soon. This is real and does some crazy things.

But I am hearing that the Tesla robot has done many billions of things in the simulator it has built.
