What type of wheelchair is that???? The #Paralympics showcases a wide variation of wheelchairs that are designed specifically for the sport. 🧵 Photo of team USA women's wheelchair basketball players celebrating a win. The two players in the center hug each other enthusiastically. A player on the left is wrapped in an American flag and is high fiving a staff member. A player on the right looks out to the crowd. First, check out every day manual wheelchairs, which may have slight to no camber, various back heights, and may have accessories like push handles, seatbelts, anti-tippers, cup holders etc. They can cost btw a couple hundred to a couple thousand.

so, what's the difference between the @Olympics, @Paralympics, and Special Olympics. Quite a lot. Let me explain: 🧵 Image The @Olympics is designed as a a flat competition, meaning no delineation on the basis of injury or symptoms. Yes, disabled people compete in it, including the goat Simone Biles & Suni Lee. But the disabilities often don't significantly impact their physical ability to compete. Image

Why I think you should watch the Paralympics:
1) it's full of folks who utilize accessible tools to show off their athleticism Photo of US track star Hunter Woodhall, a double below the knee amputee running against an athlete from Germany. 2) It's fun to watch cuz there's a ton more danger. Rugby got the name murder ball for a reason. A bunch of quads in metal wheelchairs intentionally slamming into each other 😅

Hey folks, there's a convo about Beef that I hope you're keeping up with. We can't ignore this just for Asian American representation sake. This is not the type of representation I want and you shouldn't either. There is nothing funny about rape jokes. Here's the video that was pulled off of twitter by Choe's own company #BEEFNetflix :

Tweeted about a bill that could lead to more Black & brown disabled people ending up in ERs, homeless, prison, or dead if we didn't include funding provisions. Was told I was too much a social worker & that I wanted to keep disabled ppl in institutions. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The people leading those attacks then got called out for xenophobia after posting a video live saying basically that immigrants got more attention than disabled people to congress staff. Protested those people and got a bunch of folks mad.

So, I wanted to review my COVID case so folks understand BA 4/5. I am quadruple vaccinated and have been rather careful and hadn't gotten COVID before this infection. #CovidIsNotOver On June 24th, I attended an outdoor protest and wore a mask when in crowded areas. That was the first spot I could have gotten COVID as one of my friends tested positive soon after. On the 25th, I attended another protest taking similar measures. #CovidIsNotOver

More disabled groups need to come out vehemently for abortion access. Banning abortions puts disabled people at significant risk. Many would be put at increased health risk if they were forced to bring a fertilized egg to term. #BansOffDisabledBodies #DisabledAndProChoice If your disability org truly supports bodily autonomy for the disability community, you should be supporting bodily autonomy for disabled women and those that can become pregnant. #DisabledAndProChoice #BansOffDisabledBodies

Know your rights when it comes to the ADA. If you are high risk and you doctor recommends masks, you can request your a mask mandate at your place of work as an accommodation. If they deny it, you have a right to submit a complaint to EEOC. blog.petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2022/03/08/mas… Employers may state that it is an "undue" burden. However, if they previously had a mask mandate, then itll be harder for them to prove. The workplace may also suggest other accommodations, like WFH. But if u disagree with that accommodation due to isolation, you can push back.

My statement after the Disability Community's meeting with @CDCDirector (threaded for accessibility):

1/7 While we are all pleased that Dr. Walensky was receptive today, what’s most important is fast aggressive action that will save lives:

SSI was key in helping me gain independence, getting me through college by stabilizing my living conditions, particularly during the long summer months. But it barely covered my rent back then & I incurred a lot of debt. It's time to increase benefits. #DemolishDisabledPoverty 1 of the biggest probs w/ SSI is how much it limits earnings. This significantly affects disabled ppl being able 2 get out of impoverished circumstances. My check was always affected even whenever I was able 2 get small gigs 2 help supplement my income. #DemolishDisabledPoverty

This is not what transracial means and having people do this puts real harm on transracial adoptees and is just racist. Transracial adoptees exist and our experiences shouldn't be redefined by people like you. Transracial adoption is a term that has been around since the 1980s, referring to the colonization of BIPOC children into generally white western families. Our experiences around identity, culture, & biographical history are linked to the transracial adoptee identity.
