🧵 Tips for new Cllrs.

1. Remember no one voted for you to be engrossed in internal politics. You’re being paid by taxpayers money

2. If a week goes by and you haven’t helped a resident or done something in your ward, be better. 3. Retain your non-political friends. It’s hard as Cllr hrs are anti-social but you need balance.

4. Always find time for your family. You’re a Cllr not in prison. If you have a wedding or dinner, get there.

THREAD: I’m really uncomfortable with the insinuation Muslim voters (and BAME voters) are homophobic.

Let’s look at some facts:

1. In seats where the Muslim vote is approx 50%, the seats are held strongly by Labour.

2. Muslim voters were crucial in overturning 5 seats Labour took from the Tories in 2015/2017.

3. Constituencies with high Muslim/BAME votes (20%+) are almost all held by Labour.

4. In 2015 64% of Muslim voters voted Labour and only 28% voted Tory.

THREAD: This time 2 years ago I was elected as a Councillor. I was previously blocked 3 times by the Regional Party - that changed under Corbyn.

Being a Cllr doesn’t really happen to working class BAME women from a council estate, it’s a lot of pressure to do this real. Being yourself in an organisation that frowns upon you insisting you’re called by your first name is exhausting.

I resisted from day one, it’s an attempt of conformity and institutionalisation.

Cllrs need to shape the council, not be shaped by it.

THREAD: I’ve not said much about the #LabourLeaks (mainly because I’m helping get supplies for a Food Hub in Tottenham).

Firstly, it doesn’t make me want to leave the party, on the contrary, in the words of Bernie Grant, ‘Im here to stay’. Secondly, a lot of what’s said in the report comes as no surprise. Tottenham CLP was ahead of its time, becoming ‘left’ before Corbyn became Leader... and what an eye-opener that was.

Dirty tricks, bias, double standards. Totally frustrating when you just wanted to help people.

THREAD: #DawnOnTheBallot I’ve decided to back Dawn Butler for Deputy. I am someone openly on the left of the party, a member of CLPD, Momentum etc. Supporting Dawn is against the ‘endorsement’.

However for me it’s desperately essential there is a BAME candidate for members to consider and that the perspective of what Black and other ethnic communities need is being discussed in this debate.

It’s critical when we talk about the so-called ‘Labour Heartlands’ we don’t take for granted the Caribbean, African and many ethnic communities

THREAD: Leadership Election... Let’s be honest, it’s flatter than a chapati driven over by a transit van! But so was it in 2015 at this stage... So I’m still optimistic the best is yet to come.

But here are my thoughts so far... Not one candidate thus far is even attempting to inspire the members or the electorate. In fact they’re totally ignoring 10.2m people who did vote for us.

To put that into perspective the Lib Dems got 3.6m votes. Getting 10m votes is not to be ignored.

THREAD: I don’t know who I’ll support for Leader yet (as I don’t know who is standing), although as @David__Osland said ‘I know who I’m not voting for!’

Things I’ll be looking for:

▶️Loyalty to members mandate: I won’t support anyone who was involved in the #ChickenCoup ▶️I want someone who was willing to serve in JCs team, there were enough vacancies after the 2nd Leadership/Coup.

▶️I want someone who didn’t spent any of their privileged time slagging off or name-calling our party or members publicly.

THREAD: I’m doing this for cathartic reasons. The 2010 election sent me into depression but I’m now part of a movement that will turn this frustration into determination.

Firstly I have full faith in the policies Corbyn espoused, they weren’t his - they were and are ours. The reason Jeremy and John created such a following was not just because they had policies which aimed to improve the lives of working class people but because they genuinely believed in them and had a track record that gave us assurances they were going to carry them off.

THREAD: I am trying hard not to say anything but I am reading some proper bollocks on Twitter tonight.

Unity? Where the F was your unity pleas when Jeremy was/is viciously attacked by Labour MPs?

Where was it when ‘Project Anaconda’ was launched? Where were calls about decency and integrity when MPs were ‘trying to break Jeremy as a man’?

When Cameron resigned and Tories were in array? What did 172 of you do? You got a muppet with an ice cream van to challenge our leader!

THREAD: I get many people telling me I’m lucky in Tottenham as our CLP is strong left but their CLP is hostile.

Now the UK has seen Nora Mulready, she (and her type) we’re running Tottenham CLP when I joined in 2011.

The left took over in 2012/2013. You need to be focused, determined and prepared to put in the work to enable Democracy to fix things.

There is no magic spell. It’s infuriating hearing people say “yea but CLP meetings are boring”
