I’m encouraged by today’s ceasefire deal and the preliminary framework for a release of hostages, and the provision of additional humanitarian aid.

We must hope and pray that this is the beginning of the end of the war and the release of all hostages.

(Thread 🧵) Since Hamas’ unprovoked and brutal attack on Israel on October 7th, we have witnessed an unimaginable human tragedy. The news of a cessation of hostilities is deeply welcome.

Today, there will be no organized objection to the results of a free and fair election by the sitting President, no mob that marches on the Capitol at the incitement of the President. Today, there will be no officers maced by rioters or crushed in the doors of this hallowed institution, no offices desecrated or windows smashed by insurrectionists.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve all Californians as their next United States Senator.

(Thread 🧵) My family came to the Golden State when I was a child in the hope of finding a strong economy, safe neighborhoods, and good schools.

And we found all that we could hope for in each of these respects.

As the former chair of the House Intelligence Committee, I wanted to share some quick thoughts on reports that the Trump campaign was hacked, potentially by foreign malign actors:

(Thread🧵) First, the Intelligence Community should move with great alacrity to declassify and disclose any appropriate information it has concerning the potential foreign nature of this interference.

Transparency is still our best deterrent against foreign influence operations.

This week, Trump became an unindicted co-conspirator over his efforts to overturn the election in Arizona.

Yesterday he continued to claim complete immunity for January 6th and other acts.

His threats to democracy are more brazen than ever.

Let’s break them down.

(Thread 🧵) In 2020, Trump and his team pursued a scheme to designate "fake electors" in seven states - Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, New Mexico, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The goal was to overturn @JoeBiden's lawful election as President.

I have warned for months that Azerbaijan was openly implementing a genocidal campaign against the innocent civilians of Artsakh.

🧵1/7 Today, Azerbaijan proved itself once again to be a ruthless aggressor, launching unprovoked attacks in Artsakh that have destroyed a school, killed at least one child and 24 adults, and injured more than 100 others.

With this new Georgia indictment, our democracy and the rule of law will again be put to a test.

And just like the DOJ’s last indictment, what stands out to me is how closely the facts set out in the indictment track the evidence we uncovered on the Jan 6th Committee.

🧵: 1/8 The many Trump phone calls to Republican leaders in AZ, PA, MI, and GA as part of his pressure campaign.

Trump’s badgering of Secretary of State Raffensperger and others.

The resulting danger and death threats to election workers.

We’re all watching what’s happening with Russia — and the potentially violent disarray among Russian military forces.

It stems from Putin’s tragic war of choice against Ukraine, his empowering of the worst actors within Russia, and hubris.

This is all developing, and could… twitter.com/i/web/status/1… The Wagner Group is a private military force and mercenary group, empowered and financed by Putin and run by Yevgeny Prigozhin.

What’s happening in the Senate as they repeal outdated war powers — or AUMFs — is a watershed moment.

I’ve been working on this for a long time, along with some great people like @TimKaine and @RepBarbaraLee.

A short wonky 🧵on AUMFs and Congress: Only Congress has the Constitutional authority to declare war. For too long, we’ve abdicated that power and responsibility.

Allowing presidents of both parties to use laws to justify military action in countries or against adversaries not even named in an authorization must end.

The government’s brief is devastating.

The legal arguments are compelling, but what is most striking are the facts outlining how the former president and his team knowingly put our national security at risk.

Here’s what stands out to me:

(1/7) Image This is Trump’s counsel swearing there were no more classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.

That was obviously false. Someone isn’t telling the truth.

Tomorrow, @January6thCmte will hold its first public hearing as we begin to share the findings of our investigation with the country.

I want to let you know a little about what to expect, what to look out for, and our objective. The public hearings will present both new and publicly known information in a compelling way.

Many have heard the story in drips and drabs.

But that only gives part of the picture.

Buffalo. Houston. Laguna Woods. Amarillo. Winston-Salem.

Five mass shootings in one weekend. Two hundred and three mass shootings so far this year.

It's easy to grow numb to the bloodshed.

But it doesn’t have to be this way – we can stop this.

Here's how we start: The gun industry has no incentive to support safety measures to keep guns out of the wrong hands.

So we need to hit them where it hurts: Their wallets.

That means passing laws that would ensure negligent gun makers and dealers are held to account.

I have the bill to do it.

We're headed back to the U.S. after meeting with @ZelenskyyUa in Kyiv and President @AndrzejDuda in Warsaw.

One thing is clear: We must continue to give military aid to Ukraine, and humanitarian assistance to those seeking refuge at home and in neighboring countries like Poland. Speaker Pelosi, Chairman Schiff, Chairman McGovern, ChairmanThe congressional delegation to Ukraine sits at a long table As chair of @HouseIntel, I was particularly interested in ensuring Ukraine is getting the intel they need from our agencies.

U.S. intelligence helped expose Putin's plans to the world. That helped unite our allies around sanctions.

We must do even more.

You've probably been feeling the price at the pump a lot lately. I get it.

The prices are too damn high.

There are many reasons for the sky-high prices, and one of the most pernicious: Price gouging. It must end.

I’ll explain why. Russia is the third-largest producer of oil in the world.

Last week, President Biden and Congress banned Russian oil and gas, delivering another blow to Putin’s war machine.

That means our supply is down, so prices go up at home.

But that's only half the story.

🧵: For many weeks, U.S. Intelligence agencies have warned of the potential for a major Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Despite serious efforts at diplomacy, that warning has proven all too accurate.

I want to take a moment to share some thoughts on where we go from here. First, while we are still in the early days, I believe Putin likely underestimated the Ukrainian will to fight.

Russia has an advantage in firepower and numbers, but the Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom and on their own soil.

They will not give up without a struggle.

Yesterday, yet another horrific act of violence changed a community forever.

It doesn’t have to be this way. And yet it is.

Because Republicans refuse to act.

We have the power to end the scourge of gun violence.

Here’s how we can start:

1/5
First, we should enact commonsense measures that already enjoy broad support:

-Universal background checks.
-Closing the "Charleston" loophole.
-Banning assault-style weapons.
-Red flag laws to keep guns away from abusers.

These are the bare minimum. Not the end.

It’s no secret Donald Trump held little regard for our country, our Constitution, or our democracy.

He only cared about himself.

He trampled on our norms and institutions, violating laws and breaking long-standing precedent with shocking ease.

🧵 Here’s how we fix it:

1/6 Trump was not the architect of the systemic failures that weakened our country and tore at our national fabric.

He simply exposed and exploited vulnerabilities that have lingered for decades.

And proved just how ruinous these cracks in our democratic foundation can be.

Senate Republicans blocked the creation of a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection, despite the fact that a majority of Senators — and a majority of Americans — support it.

How? Two words: The filibuster.

THREAD: The filibuster is an arcane Senate rule requiring 60 votes instead of a simple majority to end debate on a piece of legislation and bring it to a vote.

And while the filibuster has a long history, it's not written in the Constitution.

Here's why we should end it:

You're going to hear a lot of bad faith arguments about impeachment.

Trump’s team will argue you can’t convict former officials or presidents.

But history shows otherwise! And the Founders disagreed, too.

Let's turn to 18th Century Britain. (Stay with me, folks)

🚨🚨🚨THREAD: Our Founders didn’t invent impeachment from scratch. Oh no.

According to Hamilton, they looked to Britain which provided “the model from which the idea of this institution has been borrowed.”

In the 18th Century, British Parliament impeached two men – both *former* officials.

It seems the President has developed a sudden concern for the homelessness crisis. I'm glad he wants to help.

Instead of floating nonsensical and possibly illegal concepts about rounding up people experiencing homelessness and warehousing them, here are some other suggestions: One obvious place to start: stop making the problem worse by asking for billions in cuts to @HUDgov's affordable housing programs, and to safety net programs that can make the difference for families living on the edge.

I just visited a shelter for separated children in California. The kids had a place to sleep, food to eat, a school to attend and medical care. Everything, but what they need — their parents.

We must reunite these families:

facebook.com/RepAdamSchiff/… The shelter has 16 kids separated from their parents. Most had been in the facility for weeks. The parents of 2 of them had already been deported. HHS has identified all the parents, but 2 kids had yet to speak to their parent, because the detention centers are disorganized.
