I’m delighted that President Biden has signed this historic bipartisan infrastructure legislation into law. This is a huge win for everyone across the country. See how this bill will benefit Californians: $600 million will go toward increasing salaries for federal firefighters, helping narrow the salary gap that makes it hard to recruit and retain wildland firefighters in California.

This week marks the anniversaries of three mass shootings in the United States. Eight years ago, six people were killed while worshiping at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin. Last year 23 people were killed at a Walmart in El Paso, and one day later nine people were killed in Ohio. These three anniversaries are tragic reminders of how often we experience mass shootings in this country. No other nation has as many guns or allows such easy access to guns. It’s absolutely unacceptable that Republicans still refuse to take action against gun violence.

Today the Senate passed a second coronavirus response bill focused on helping American families facing hardship because of the virus. We need to ensure that families suffering from this virus are taken care of, and this bill gets us closer to that goal. First, this bill ensures that coronavirus testing is free for everyone who needs it, including the uninsured. No one should go untested because they’re worried they can’t pay for it.

THREAD: "Thoughts and prayers" don't make up for the lives lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School or any of the mass shootings around the country. If we want to truly honor the memory of those lost, we must act to ensure such tragedies never happen again. There are several gun-safety bills ready to be voted on TODAY. We should start with a bill to empower families and police to remove guns from individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others. We just need Senate Republicans to stand up to the NRA.

The president this week attacked two of California’s cities. Never before have I seen a president go out of his way to attack a state. The president should be looking to help.

California’s state, county and city governments are all taking great pains and dedicating considerable funds to confront these challenges. Homelessness is one of @GavinNewsom’s top priorities, so much so that he wants to double state spending on the problem to $1 billion.

I’m pleased the Supreme Court rejected the administration’s rationale for adding a citizenship question. However, the court’s conservative majority overlooked clear evidence that adding it would discourage census participation in immigrant communities and communities of color. I’m concerned what that will mean for future rulings. The Constitution calls for an accurate count of ALL individuals living in the U.S.. A Census Bureau report found that adding the citizenship question could result in an up to 8 % undercount.

THREAD: Today we voted on a nominee—Matthew Kacsmaryk—whose career has been defined by opposition to the rights of LGBT Americans. He has argued against marriage equality, offensively described the transgender community and defended discrimination against same-sex couples. Mr. Kacsmaryk’s long record of opposing civil rights protections for LGBT Americans should disqualify him from service on the bench. They demonstrate that he puts his personal opinion above Supreme Court precedent.

Schools are supposed to be safe havens, but instead we have active shooter drills and “run, hide, fight” exercises. How can society stomach this and not FORCE action? We have several bills that could immediately begin to stop the carnage. Universal background checks. Anyone can walk into a gun show or go online and buy a gun, with no checks at all. This isn’t a loophole, it’s a cataclysmic flaw in the system that lets any dangerous people buy as many guns as they want. Poll: 83% of Americans support this.

Today, the Senate will vote on cloture for Neomi Rao’s nomination to the D.C. Circuit. Rao led Trump administration efforts to abolish regulations protecting consumers and the environment, but she refused to commit to recusing herself in cases involving these regulations. Greg Katsas, another Trump nominee, made this pledge, as any nominee should. Recusal is particularly relevant in Rao’s case due to her record of directly working to dismantle regulations that ensure the air we breathe is safe, address global warming and protect consumers.

THREAD: Today, Senate Republicans will hold a cloture vote on the nomination of Paul Matey to be a judge for the Third Circuit. Despite a century-long practice of consulting home state senators, neither Senator Booker or Menendez were consulted on Matey’s nomination. No Democratic majority has EVER held a hearing or confirmed a judicial nominee over the objection of a home-state Republican senator — NEVER. Matey will be the SEVENTH circuit court judge confirmed under President Trump over the objection of home-state Democratic senators.

On sexual assault, Neomi Rao wrote that if a woman “drinks to the point where she can no longer choose, well, getting to that point was part of her choice.” While she has since said that she “lacked the perspective of how [her articles] might be perceived by others,” her record shows these views persist today.

THREAD: The Senate Judiciary Committee voted to send Neomi Rao’s nomination to serve on the D.C. Circuit to the Senate floor for a vote. I voted NO. From her writings to her work dismantling regulations to her lack of candor with the Committee — her record is deeply concerning. I believe it is particularly relevant that Rao has a record of working to dismantle key regulations that ensure the air we breathe is safe, that address global warming, and that protect American workers and consumers.

Last year we saw tens of thousands of students take to the streets to demand action to stop mass shootings and stem the epidemic of gun violence that plagues our communities. This generation has grown up with active-shooter drills, hiding under their desks. #EnoughIsEnough Americans across the nation are asking Congress to reinstate the federal ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. If we’re going to put a stop to mass shootings and protect our children, we need to get these weapons of war off our streets.

THREAD: The effects of climate change are already manifesting themselves around us. From record-breaking fire seasons to drought and sea-level rise, California is witnessing a preview of things to come if we don’t act now to fight global warming. It’s #TimeToWakeUp. Climate change is already threatening our coastal cities. San Francisco’s historic waterfront is being threatened and the seawall is in need of upgrading to handle stronger storms. This is what we can expect as temperatures continue to rise.

THREAD: Michael Cohen’s guilty plea directly implicates President Trump and raises serious questions about whether he has been honest with the American people about his ties to Russia. Cohen admitted to working with Russian government officials on a real estate deal for Trump, and doing so well into the presidential campaign. Cohen also admitted to briefing Trump and his family repeatedly about the status of the Trump Tower Moscow project.

THREAD: Tom Farr is nominated to a district court seat that’s been vacant for 12 years because Republicans refused to confirm anyone for the entire Obama administration. Obama nominated two highly-qualified African-American women to this very seat. Republicans used their blue slips to block these nominees and hold open the seat for over a decade. Now, President Trump has nominated Tom Farr, who has a long history of opposition to voting rights. He’s been a leader in suppression of African-American voters in North Carolina.

Important: The Senate this week is voting on the nomination of Tom Farr, who has a long record of supporting laws to restrict the voting rights and representation of African Americans. All @SenateDems oppose his nomination. We need just two Republicans to vote NO. The Congressional Black Caucus expressed its strong opposition to Farr’s nomination, writing that “Farr has amassed a record that puts him at the forefront of an extended fight to disenfranchise African-American voters.”

As open enrollment continues, it’s important to remember that California has seen great improvements in coverage as a result of the Affordable Care Act. We’ve gone from a state with 16% uninsured in 2013 to 7% today. Thanks to @CoveredCA, individuals now have a place to turn for quality coverage when they find themselves between jobs, self-employed, or without employer coverage. And many qualify for federal subsidies that help make coverage more affordable.

Late last night the Judiciary Committee was informed in a letter from Bill Burck that Presidents Bush and Trump would claim executive privilege on more than 100,000 pages of Brett Kavanaugh’s records from the White House Counsel’s Office.
