There’s a lot of misinformation swirling out of our hearing that Republicans haven’t called for cuts to Social Security.

Here's a brief list of Republicans doing just that.

Enjoy.

(A thread 1/9 🧵)
whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/… Last month, Senator Ron Johnson said that Social Security was “a legal Ponzi scheme” that should've been privatized.

He’s also proposed eliminating the entitlement to Social Security benefits, making Congress approve it each year.

Republican math doesn’t add up.

Balancing the budget in 10 years is IMPOSSIBLE if Republicans keep their (dubious) promises and leave Social Security, Medicare, defense and veterans’ benefits alone while also making permanent the Trump tax breaks for the very wealthy.

(1/4) If Republicans follow-through on their cuts:

Commercial air travel would shut down.
Federal school lunch programs would be eliminated.
The Border Patrol would be eliminated.
Crop insurance programs would be eliminated.
Grants to fight the opioid epidemic would be eliminated.

By threatening default, MAGA Republicans are steering our economy toward unprecedented chaos.

Here are 3 possible scenarios from their debt brinkmanship and default threats.

Spoiler alert: All of them would be disasters for U.S. workers and families. 🧵
nytimes.com/2023/03/07/us/… Scenario 1—Republicans pass a law to pay only some of our bills if they cause default.

The result? Millions of families and businesses don’t get paid on time, markets crash, Republicans quickly change course, but the damage is done.

The Republican witnesses in yesterday’s @SenateBudget hearing didn’t seem to have their facts straight.

So we’re setting the record straight with FIVE FACT CHECKS.

(1/6) 🧵

#RisingSeasRisingCosts CLAIM: Fossil-fuel funded @ceidotorg witness falsely claimed the impact of extreme weather has decreased fivefold since 1980s.

FACT CHECK: Not according to the World Meteorological Organization, which finds losses due to extreme weather have increased SEVENFOLD (1970s-2010s).

Here's our Trump FY2021 budget thread, which we'll be updating throughout the day.

Ranking Member @SenSanders: "I will do what I can to ensure that Trump’s Budget is rejected by Congress. This is not what our priorities as a country are about.”
budget.senate.gov/ranking-member… @SenSanders The Trump budget calls for $182 billion in cuts to SNAP. SNAP gives just $1.40 per meal. It lifts 7 million out of poverty. And Trump would eviscerate it.
