Mystified by the praise Qala is getting. The "aesthetic" is so heavy-handed & over the top. The lighting is Game-of-Thrones level dark, kept expecting a White Walker to pop out anytime. Dimri is only ever backlit or lit by overhead lights to unsubtly stress SHADOWS = SAD. And then the music, utterly unfit for 30s Bombay cinema. The era of Shanta Apte, Kanan Devi, Devika Rani with simple low-pitched theater-inspired folk tunes inexplicably has a Lata-like hyperfeminine vocal star. Why not just make this a 50s film instead when that voice reigned?

Anecdotally speaking, most conservative Brahmin families I know comfortably established in cities are connected at least loosely to a nearby shakha. Shakhas cultivate strong community ties with local Brahmin communities first & foremost, then begin "outreach" with non-Brahmins. In smaller cities, local shakhas' ties are even stronger with Brahmin institutions like temples, colleges, hospitals, media orgs. In Manipal one Republic Day, students doing a march-past wanted black headgear for a costume & the director got topis from a local shakha in hours.
