Fascists Making Deserts, Calling It Peace Profile picture
The weak crumble, are slaughtered and are erased from history while the strong, for good or for ill, survive.

A thread on the incident at Dean Chemerinsky's home @BerkeleyLaw yesterday @JameelJaffer @DavidLat First, while it is most likely the case that the student did not have a First Amendment right to speak at the dinner, per @DavidLat's useful analysis (see ), one is left wondering at the proportionality of the response.

#Israel and is defenders seem to think they can't be guilty of #genocide because they are prosecuting a war against a people who are fighting back. (thread 1/17) In fact, the paradigmatic case of genocide is when the enemy resists and the victor has no political means to assimilate him.

Just finished listening to part I of this hearing. The judge, a George HW Bush appointee, is clearly sympathetic to the plaintiffs, even as he understands that the law is not likely to support a judicial intervention (1/5). @Heidi__Matthews @BhabhaFaisaluscourts.gov/cameras-courts… Another important point: the judge repeatedly emphasized how important and weighty this case is, and he made repeated references to the ICJ decision in this part of the hearing which was devoted to technical questions of federal jurisdiction and the separation of powers.

Here is the text of the #ICJ's ruling granting provisional measures in #SouthAfrica's case against #Israel. My quick thoughts are set out in the thread below. 🧵(1/25) nytimes.com/interactive/20… First, the #ICJ confirmed that the conduct alleged by South Africa could constitute violations of the Genocide Convention. Accordingly, the complaint is legally valid and must be addressed on its merits contrary to those who claim that the claim was without basis in law or fact. Image

Tal Becker, Legal Advisor to Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made #Israel's opening statement to the @CIJ_ICJ today. This seemingly innocuous statement about wanting to empower #Palestinians to govern themselves but not "threaten" Israel is the heart of the problem Image In repeating this aim, he is reiterating a goal long sought by #Israel, a goal a recent article by @SethAckerman identified as "absolute security".

People need to reflect deeply on what @KhalilJeries is saying here: what #Israel has done to the #Palestinians over the course of the last 75 years is horrific by any measure. 🧵 The state came into existence through #EthnicCleansing of at least 700,000 non-Jewish Arab Palestinians.

If you don't understand why the progressive demands on #Palestine must expand the #OvertonWindow on thinking about Palestine, this is a must read. (🧵) 1/23

jacobin.com/2024/01/iron-w… As @SethAckerman makes clear, #Israel's long-established policy of pursuing #absolutesecurity has now reached its apogee in seeking the physical destruction of the #Palestinians. This is the logical conclusion of that policy.

It is important to understand that #Israel's attacks against #UNRWA are not incidental. They are part and parcel of its genocidal war against #Palestine.🧵(1/9) Image The #UN established #UNRWA in response to the #Nakba. The international community at the time anticipated that it would be a temporary solution until peace was achieved and the refugees could return home.

The problem with #Israel as the expression of Jewish self-determination is not that Jewish self-determination in itself is objectionable. It is that its current form is callously indifferent to #Palestinian rights. @ezraklein A long🧵 The #Zionist understanding of self-determination is built on 19th and early 20th century understandings of nationalism that view minorities as obstacles to the majority's practical right of self-determination.

How #Zionism's relationship to #Palestine is like #Putinism's relationship to #Ukraine. (a long thread) It is non-controversial in the west to see #Putin's February 2022 invasion of #Ukraine as a blatant act of aggression, not just against a sovereign state, but against the very idea of the post-WWII international order. Indeed, I too, subscribe to that idea.

I have several things to say about this statement. (thread) (1/23) cbc.ca/news/canada/to…

First, the students are absolutely correct, morally and politically, to support resistance to Israeli policies, and to recognize them as #colonial and based on principles of #apartheid. They are correct to take a stance trying to stop the #genocide train.
