Why do people in your line of work always fall back on this tired motte and bailey?

"You can't just translate" when complaints are universally about removing functions from games, censoring side boob, removing complex dialogue altogether, or adding the fuck word for no reason I would be on your side if you actually put in an effort to police your own and struck out against the most egregious manifestations of unnecessary changes or unilateral reinterpretations but like

Nobody ever seems to want to do that. You're all wicked fucking tribal.

The reason they are doing this is not because of "modern audiences". We are a diverse group who come together and appreciate things without a filter.

The REAL reason they are doing this is: They need to reliably grow and make more money than the previous quarter for eternity They need to please shareholders.

Shareholders don't give a flying fuck about the product or the people making it.

All shareholders want is for their share to be worth more money next quarter. If you can't do that, no matter what value you bring to consumers, you will be axed.

When I was a kid, games and manga were a view into a culture very unlike my own. This expanded my horizons and led to my life now, living in Japan, and adapting to this culture much easier

It was inspiring to learn these things

Why is what happened to me so undesirable for you? There are so many things I believe my home country can learn from Japan to make life there much better and more fulfilling, healthier, and better for the environment and for communities. I want that cross-cultural exchange to expand, not to be contracted or filtered.

The Japanese anime space is a symbiotic relationship where the fan space is an active part of both the experience of the original work, and of the original work at the same time. It is a democratic space wherein consumers have a good chance of becoming part of creation. The US entertainment space is a self appointed Clergy issuing dictates down to consumers so the consumers pay their tithes. There is not only no interaction between the creators and the consumers, there is not only no such thing as a doujin space in the US, but there is more:

I want to speak to my Japanese audience about Americans living in Japan, as an American.

1: Literally no American civilian living in Japan will be a "normal" American. Not everything they do is going to show how normal Americans act. 2: most normal American men shave a lot more than the American men you see in Japan. I don't know why they are like this here specifically when it is far more socially acceptable in the US to not shave. Yes they do stick out even to me.

Interesting for a Romanian to lecture about paying for war crimes when they literally did the Holocaust sooner, faster, and with a wider net than even the Nazis, without Nazi backing, without Nazi prompting, and worldwide nobody seems to even know. Germany early on: "We'll just murder the Jewish men"
Romania, same time: "Oh we're doing them all in. Men, women, kids, all of them. Not even matrilineally either, if you have even one grandparent you get the gas"

There are myriad other factors that play into power imbalance that dwarf age gaps in impact but nobody seems to talk about that. Able bodied with disabled. Sheltered suburbanite with someone who grew up in the projects. Postgrads with people who only went to high school. Farmer with city person living in a rural area. People who moved many times as a kid with people who never left their state.

Corporate driven consumption IPs. Boards of directors do not understand appeal and therefore don't want to try "new" things because they are inherently risky.

They don't care about engagement, they only care about mass consumption. LotR is a perfect example:

For 60 years the only thing sold was the books.

Then the Bakshi movie.

Then the live action, and with that came the merchandising.

PLACE, America: "Natural beauty abounds. Let us restrict access to it to only the people who can afford to own or access it and make everything else into parking lots" PLACE, Japan: "Natural beauty abounds. Let us restrict our development to certain areas so future generations can enjoy seeing these things, and take care of beautiful areas"

I am seeing the iDubbbz "apology video" for the first time and I can't understand how someone can miss the mark on their own content this badly. My take on the personas of that early 2010s youtube shit was that it *reflected* bad shit rather than perpetuating or encouraging it. Nobody looked at Filthy Frank or Max Mofo or iDubbbz as role models

Something interesting that I learned a while back that might end up returning soon:

Up until the 1940s, American grocery and drug stores used to have everything behind a counter. You gave your list to the clerk and he would collect the items on your list and charge you. https://t.co/0ysvO1Gclv
Image I'm wondering if this might make a comeback in the coming years, or if we'll go fully digital and just use pick and sort machines and conveyor belts working on a touch screen.

Walgreens of all stores is an excellent candidate for this type of "store"

One Japan myth I was told a lot that is absolutely not true is the "If you are American and you want to find food on a budget and can't speak Japanese just go to McDonalds" myth. 1: McDonalds in Japan is more expensive than many simple eateries and chains. Still less expensive than American McDonalds (which is only marginally cheaper than Panera at this point!!)

The American dream isn't "work hard and contribute to society and get rewarded with comfort" anymore

The American Dream today is "get as much currency as possible to divorce oneself from society to the greatest extent possible and not have to contribute to it" We stopped rewarding or even simply fairly paying the people who contribute to society the most, we reward people with unfathomable riches for horse shit like "being an influencer" and making giga corps destroying people's lives for cheaply made consumables.

1- Higher education is a racket
2- Unstable job market
3- They are in a demographic that currently faces a very high risk having their lives destroyed by accusations
4- Transport costs make jobs actually a money sink 5- Family coddling and/or sheltering that can't be reversed overnight, especially not by the parents who induced it upon them
6- You live in suburbs which are employment deserts for anyone not jumping right into $80k white collar work

2.3 million Americans own and operate farm land. 500,000 operate or work for small or medium sized contractors.

The number of pickup trucks like Rams and F-Series, sold in 2022 amounted to 10 MILLION. So around 3 new trucks per person who actually uses them for purpose. I am told to believe here that all of these trucks, literally 80% of new vehicle sales in FY 2022, are being used for their intended purposes and not as commuter cars or for light duty work that an expanded offering of body types could not supply to the consumers.

So Japanese mini trucks are popping the fuck off especially with working class people and farmers

They were so popular with fishermen in my old stomping grounds in Maine that a law was passed banning them

So tell me again that "the American people" "want" gigantic F350s. It's all corporate marketing and never actual pragmatic application. Modern pickups are impractical for actual workers and are just status symbols nowadays.

Every month I will post a photo of something I bought for around $8 that brings my life more value than a Twitter Blue sub ever would.

March: this is one of two bottles of Portsmouth Brewery Impy Stout that I bought. Image It is a practically syrupy stout with a complex molasses taste. The Brewery makes it every winter and it comes out around late February. It used to be marketed as "Russian Impy Stout" but the branding was changed last year due to the whole thing going on.

I'll say it:

American society fucking sucks lately. Everyone is at each other's throats, people are extremely trigger happy to cut ties over every little thing, nobody trusts each other, and authority is either extraordinarily unfair or completely fucking absent. Everyone is afraid of losing everything (because they can), everyone is living in a default state of economic precarity, we have undergone a massive transformation into a low trust society, spent decades absorbing lies about our identity as a country, truth is seen as subjective.

If I am pressed for what my definition of "white woman" is I guess I'll go for this:

If she has any of these things, regardless of her skin color ImageImageImageImage Anyways it's 2 AM and I have a half gallon of movie theater cola in my stomach I need to fucking sleep

I'm just asking what the rules of the game are before I step into the ring.

Is it skin color only? I sunburn even when it's overcast.

Is it cultural? I was raised by a Mexican stepmother.

Are Argentinians white? Lithuanians? Jews? Greeks? Iranians? Ainu? This is such a simple question you don't have to throw "white women who are overzealous with their white guilt" in my face and pretend that's a gotcha on anyone but you.
