These are definitely all very plausible reasons why people are sounding the alarm. And I think they are really crucial concerns and must be addressed. As one of the *few* AI people who believe we should *both* emphasize current and near term harms, *and* extinction risks, I.. 1/ .. completely understand this thread and the arguments made in it; I think they represent very real motivations (possibly conscious and deliberate, possibly subconscious/unintentional) of some of the people pushing AI xrisk, especially tech leaders such as @sama and co. 2/

After applying multiple ableist and sanist insults to me and claiming I'm harassing him by refusing to accept his disdain as a substantive argument, I've blocked the coiner of the term "AGI".

I don't think I realized it until this very moment, but hear me out: I hypothesize that "AGI" is rapidly becoming a dogwhistle. In one fell swoop, it communicates to tech bros what the field's priorities are, saying "you're among friends", while clearly telegraphing to.. 1/ ... minoritized researchers that they are not welcome, that their concerns about ethics and harms are unimportant, and that creating a superhuman godlike entity is far more important than to safeguard real humans from real harms, here and now. 2/

Yesterday I heard a podcast with @KCDavisSays on ableism and the awesome guest (name escapes me atm) said: disabled people live in a world that wants them dead. It took some time to sink in. The more I think of it, the more I see how it applies. @KCDavisSays As a financially well-off, white-passing, able-passing woman, I have been comparatively sheltered from this knowledge most of my life. Nevertheless, instinctively I knew this to be true since I was a child.

I did sign this statement on AI extinction risk. My thoughts below🧵

safe.ai/statement-on-a… When I first received word of the statement from @DanHendrycks, its wording was different. I replied right away stating that I was not comfortable signing the statement as worded.
