In 1966 anti-Vietnam War sentiment among middle-classes hadn't yet become a powerful force (excuse used for Project 100,000: new massive college kid/parent demo hated getting drafted/son drafted to Vietnam). Striking McNamara's "Folly" was initiated so early into Vietnam War. As far as I know, only book on McNamara’s “Project 100,000.” Author is not even wholly anti-Vietnam War (he chose to enlist in the war after college) and yet stories he compiles are horrific indictment of the war & US military. One of the most disturbing books I’ve ever read. Image

As someone of mixed WASP & Catholic upbringing, I've wondered about this dynamic a lot over last half decade. I have a few possible theories. The one I feel most strongly is at least partially accurate is that Catholicism fits into Guenon-style (Capital T) Traditionalism I'll add, as someone raised in hybrid New England Catholic & WASP home in MA town of same makeup (town was 3 miles long, 3 elementary schools, 3 country clubs). It's sociologically interesting/relevant that by 90s, hometown's WASP country clubs now had mainly Catholic base

A co-worker who grew up in South Bronx in the 1970s/1980s mentioned how, when she was in high school, it was well-known that landlords would come up to her classmates and offer them money to set arson fires on apartment buildings in their community She also shared her theory most of NYC's homeless shelters are in historic armories (something she noted & I saw in real time are changing to motels since 2020) because govt wants to sit on access to weapon stockpile underneath the armories. The way this music video is clearly an homage to the imagery of 1988 Francis Bacon (the painter) biopic "Love is the Devil." I have to respect whoever it was on her team who hired very aesthetically knowledgeable & cool gay men to run her pop star rebrand
