Journalism so often demands better of society. But awards and promotes abusers and bullies in its own ranks.
It’s our great hypocrisy.
And so damaging. Why do we think people keep leaving the industry, or don’t want to be journalists in the first place?
Journalists talk about it. They talk about abusive bosses. Predators. Racists. Small people given great power.
But they’re too afraid, or too exhausted, to speak out. Their careers will be on the line.
They will carry the consequences. Not the abusers.
