Feels like many misunderstand the difference between bond holders/stockholders/executives and depositors. No one is arguing to bail out the bank. Equity holders should lose everything. But depositors (who did nothing speculative) can’t access their $ to make payroll this week. 1/ Putting your money in a checking/savings account in one of the largest banks in America with a 40-year history is not tech companies playing fast and loose. Furthermore, there are tremendous assets held by the bank—maybe enough to cover 100% of depositors—it will just take time.

This rhetoric is destructive and wrong and—honestly—evil. We don’t need a divorce, we need marriage counseling. And we need elected leaders that don’t profit by tearing us apart. We can disagree without hate. Healthy conflict was critical to our nation’s founding and survival. As Reagan said: “These visitors…do not come as white or black…they are not Jews or Christians; conservatives or liberals; or Democrats or Republicans. They are Americans awed by what has gone before, proud of what for them is still … a shining city on a hill.”

🧵I’m excited to see so many new people interested in water policy/drought/saving the Great Salt Lake over the past couple weeks! Unfortunately many have gotten their information from the NYTimes or John Oliver…so let me share with you some BIG changes we’ve made just this year. Sadly the Times/Oliver failed to research/report most of the work that has been done on these issues…so I thought it might be helpful to put as much of it as possible in an easy thread for anyone that is really interested. The experts agree, these are not just baby steps.

Great. Instead of drastically increasing oil/gas production (and more renewables) in a country with some of the most stringent environmental standards in the world (hint: it’s ours), let’s beg the Saudis. They seem really nice and responsible. Brilliant. Bravo guys. And while we’re at it, it would be hilarious—if it wasn’t so sad—to see multiple reports from the renewable energy sector that new renewable projects were easier and more successful under Trump than Biden.

🧵I know many people are concerned and curious about vaccine effectiveness and breakthrough infections. This IHC data for the last 30 days is stunning. It turns out the raw numbers of breakthrough cases/hospitalizations/deaths don’t tell the whole story. 1/ Over the past 30 days, IHC has treated 339 COVID-19 ICU patients. 297 (88%) were unvaccinated and 42 were vaccinated. That’s very persuasive and right in line with projections. But digging deeper the data gets MUCH more persuasive. 2/

When I became Governor we were delivering about 5,000 vaccines each day. Yesterday we did 15,000. A quick thread on how we got here and where are headed. (But the short answer is that our local health departments have stepped up in a big way). 1/ That first week we made some critical changes. The 3 most important: 1) Vaccine must be used within 7 days; 2) 70+ eligibility; and 3) Local Health Depts lead. 2/

Today I made many critical announcements re vaccine distribution via executive order:

-Long-term care facilities must be vaccinated by 1/23.
-Starting Monday, teachers are eligible (should be prioritized based on age/comorbidities).
-On 1/18 all Utahns age 70+ are eligible. 1/ -Every facility must report doses administered by 7am.
-Vaccines must be distributed w/in week of receipt.
-Vaccines not administered will be subject to redistribution.
-Those w a positive COVID test in past 90 days should not be vaccinated (will ask feds to change to 180). 2/

[Thread] I’ve spoken often about how politics has become a religion for far too many people...but I’m equally worried that it is becoming something else: Sport. While many are concerned that sports has become too political, I’m worried that politics has become too sporty. 1/ There are some obvious parallels between religion and sports fanaticism that can (and have) been explored by me and others elsewhere. But politics as sport has a huge entertainment value and significantly different expectations for the players (politicians) and fans (voters). 2/

Today Gov. Herbert and community leaders announced the creation of the Utah Compact on Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. History teaches us that progress doesn’t just happen. It requires forethought, commitment and deliberate action. 1/3 slchamber.com/utahcompact/ These principles reflect a firm resolve toward racial justice, a direction toward equity & inclusion that will continue during my administration. This isn’t about political correctness, it’s about human correctness. It’s about kindness, decency and love for our fellow travelers.

Abby and I wish a heart-felt congratulations to @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris on the election call today. Thank you for your commitment to unite us all. We pray for you and promise to work with you to benefit the people of Utah. 1/ To President Trump and VP Pence, thank you for your sacrifice and leadership over the past 4 years. It has been a privilege to serve with you. We understand the toll that elected office takes on you and your families and are grateful for your willingness to serve. 2/

This is the heart-breaking story of my mom’s best friend who lost her dad and then her own life due to Covid. Unfortunately this story will be playing out many more times over the coming weeks. Please read it. I hope it scares all of us. 1/ If that doesn’t get our attention, maybe this thread will. Our ICU’s are full and our doctors and nurses are overwhelmed. With giant spikes happening all over the country, it will be harder for us to get help from neighboring states. 2/

Hey guys, please ignore this type of garbage. The truth is that elections are never decided on election night. In Utah (and most states) it takes 2 weeks to finalize counting and certify results. It really doesn’t matter who is ahead on election night, it only matters when...1/ ...every eligible vote is counted and each county canvasses and certifies the vote totals. Yes it’s true that when a race isn’t close the media may “call” the race, and candidates may concede or declare custody, but such actions are technically meaningless. 2/

Ok, here is part 2 of my earlier thread. I want to share what our incredible team has been working on over the past few months. They don’t get near enough credit. And while I’m only sharing a fraction of what they do...buckle up. It’s a lot. (Sorry for the length of this one). We call this a whole-of-government response. Every single department in state government has supported our pandemic response.

The State of Utah has more than 200 people working under a Unified Command structure. @UtahDepofHealth is the primary agency, but they are supported by:

While I sincerely hope you have been following the Governor’s weekly press conferences, today I will share a couple threads on the seriousness of the coronavirus spread and the Unified Command’s response. 1/ Unfortunately, most states are seeing record numbers of cases and Utah is no exception. Today will be another very bad day. 2/

Hey friends, this week many of our kids will be heading back to school—including my own kids—and I want to share a few thoughts about what to expect. Like everything pandemic related, school reponenings have become controversial. But we will always be better working together. 1/ Please know that we have been working closely with administrators, teachers, boards, parents, kids and medical experts since March on how to make the best of a bunch of bad options. Experts agree that there is risk in going back to school and risk in NOT going back to school. 2/

Ok friends, we need to have a discussion about how to avoid spreading Covid this holiday weekend. We had surges after Memorial Day and July 4th and we have to do better this time. But first some good news. Utah had the lowest transmission rate in the country this week! 1/ So let’s discuss a little science and then a couple stories. You’re probably familiar with the R0 values by now—or the number of infections stemming from a single case. An R0 below one is good and means infections are declining. 2/ google.com/amp/s/www.nyti…

[Thread] Hey friends, over the past few weeks I've been a little less visible in our state’s coronavirus response. That was deliberate. With daily criticism coming from other campaigns, I worried that my public involvement might hurt our team’s response in this critical time. However, because of the recent increase in cases and hospitalizations, I feel that I need to be more vocal. Over the first few months of this awful virus, we worked closely together and sacrificed to buy time. 2/

This is a very good bill and fits perfectly with our telework initiative. Dan deserves a ton of credit and support for this. I’ve said before that we should treat red air days like snow days, but this is better. (The private sector should adopt this too). Last year we started a telework initiative w 130 employees working from home 3-5 days/week. We measured everything they did for 6 months and the results exceeded our expectations. Of course we took cars off the road and pollution out of the air, but productivity also went up 20%!

1/ Hey friends, I want to share a few things about our coronavirus response that haven't gotten much attention. As we cautiously open things up we tend to obsess over case counts (which matter!) and miss the testing and tracing infrastructure that we have been furiously building. 2/ Remember, there were multiple reasons for extreme social distancing. The one we talk about most is to flatten the curve and not overwhelm our healthcare systems. But equally important is buying time to build out our testing and tracing capacity.

[Thread] 1/ Just a few thoughts on where we are headed... the latest numbers are all VERY encouraging (w one possible exception) and it means there is a real chance of opening parts of the economy much sooner than many expected! 2) An early Utah-specific projection from the National Guard had us hitting 9,600 cases, 1,200 hospital beds and 192 ICU beds this week. Instead we are at 2400/213/59. This is called flattening the curve and it shows that everything we are doing really is working.

Thread] Good morning friends! Just a few thoughts now that we have our 1st positive COVID-19 case here in Utah. I want to share some of the information that scientists have shared with me about why our personal actions are so important with this pandemic. First a few notes on what we know with this patient. The person was infected as a passenger on the previous voyage of the cruise ship that is currently being held off the coast of California. The person has been home for over a week but did not know he/she was at risk.
