In Ireland I got asked by a young aspiring creator about writing Batman — how do you know that you’re doing a true or correct version of him? I’ve been thinking about this a lot and the truth is, I believe in a nature/nurture approach to him (and all licensed characters really)1/
The thing is there are only a few core intractable things about characters like Batman that make him who he is across all versions -ex.every night he pushes himself to the limit to prevent what happened to him from ever happening again & improve Gotham etc. That’s his nature.2/

So someone named Jake, with the same last name as my wife’s maiden one, must have typed her email into the Trump donor list instead of his by mistake. So she gets these emails from the campaign and they’re kind of insane.
First of all, they come ALL the time, like 5x a day.
But the wild thing about them is that they’re all about convincing Jake that Trump is disappointed in him for not contributing more. Like personally disappointed in Jake from Vermont. Like looking up from his desk being like, Jake didn’t order the NEW hat?

The other day when I was doing a Q & A, someone asked a version of the classic question, "why writers are so crazy? Is it a prerequisite?" I ran out of time before I could answer, but been meaning to post some thoughts as this is something i struggle with myself.
The thing with writing is that you spend all day alone, and to make something meaningful to you, you often have to spend that time staring at and exploring things that matter to you - things you hope for, things you're deeply afraid of. About the world. About yourself.
