I had no idea what this was about. After investigating, I still have no idea what it's about but I know I despise every single person involved. I take this as proof that I am definitely not conservative. Actually, this illustrates an important point:

I complain about lefties partly because they have power, but partly because I can't escape their bullshit. I can get along for months with no idea what happens in righty town, because it's not shoved down my throat.

Oh, honey, no. Frank Herbert was from Tacoma. The movie was "inspired" by Tacoma, Washington. Fremen aren't real. "entirely inspired by north african and southwest asian history and culture" BITCH it was about the American northwest and shrooms you stupid cowImage

This is a huge digression, but I want to expand something that I usually only hint at, which I think is very important. So bear with me for a minute.

The classical Daoists were known for turning their attention to nature. Xunzi specifically condemns Zhuangzi for this. But the word 'nature' is connotatively misleading, particularly for modern westerners. If we translate it instead as 'reality', we can see early Daoism as containing a particularly relentless focus on empiricism.

Off-topic but the cat statistic is inflated by a small group of ornithologists and ecologists who have a long-term project to exterminate all domestic cats. No, I'm not making that up. There's stuff like this and the grad student in Athens GA who was convicted of poisoning cats, but more importantly some really unhinged 'scholarship' in real journals that's fairly open about their goals.

As a deformed freak, I am deeply insulted at being linked to communists here. But the fascists have stumbled on something interesting.

Communism loves to jump in front of a parade and pretend the parade is following them. Image Wherever social momentum gathers, you'll find communists taking credit. The word 'bolshevik' literally means 'majority'. (They weren't a majority until they killed off their rivals, but that doesn't matter to a communist.)

Interesting thread, also a lot of dangerous misunderstanding here.

Our public health authorities suck, institutions have been hollowed out by apparatchiks, but also these issues are ones a hypothetical competent, benign authority would encounter again and again. There will always be a heartbreaking case where a baby drops dead right after vaccination, even if the vaccine is completely safe, because in a large enough population there will always be babies dropping dead of unknown causes. Our mediasphere will always seize and amplify.

I was going to make a black walnut cheesecake for thanksgiving. But it looks like there's a massive black walnut shortage, can't find it anywhere. Amazon has some if you want to buy a 35 pound box. Looking for black walnut extract mostly turns up weird herbalist mixes like 'black walnut and wormwood'. Man, I am not making wormwood cheesecake, fuck you.

It's lim inf, not lim. Which is to say, for any arbitrarily large n, there exists m > n such that p_{m+1} - p_m < 7 x 10^7, not that the gap is that small for *all* p.

A friend of mine from grad school is one of the world experts on this kind of question. The overall density of primes is ~1 / log(N) for large N, which goes to zero as N -> infinity, so it's not possible to have a uniform upper bound. Rather, this is a result in the neighborhood of the Twin Prime Conjecture, which conjectures that the lim inf is actually 2.

It's interesting to watch the chatter around Trump getting reinstated, because I've had that fucker muted for years, so I only see the second- and third-order effects of his account. He'd have zero effect on me if people would just stop talking about him. One might assume that people who scream about Trump are choosing to do so because they enjoy it. You don't have to care. You really don't.

We've been here before, but:

Every few years, there's a big Study that purports to show this. If you dig into the details, there's a lot of questionable classification, but the main issue is the way US prison gangs are identified by themselves and by the authorities. Prison gangs are mostly organized along ethnic lines. This isn't political, in the sense of electoral politics, but white gangs are labeled Far Right while latino and black gangs aren't considered political.

The apes on the right appear to be white-handed gibbons, which are native to southeast Asia, not US national parks. Those might be cougars and not on the left, but they seem to be in a savannah, which is not a cougar's preferred habitat. cougars and not lions, I mean

TIL there's a term for a style of propaganda that I Noticed emerging back around 2016: "permission structure". modelthinkers.com/mental-model/p…

Apparently Obama championed it back in 2013, and I guess a lot of money got poured into it. That link presents the approach as benevolent, even rationalism-adjacent, but the strongest example of the techniques has been the goddamned Lincoln Project, which attempted to give marginal Republicans a cope structure for voting Democratic. And see how that worked out.

I could fill pages with this (and have), but I would note first that "whether this _individual_ should be allowed" etc. etc. is the wrong question, and a pernicious misframing. The issue is the Bill Ward fetish tits and accompanying cosplay. Image "Very few can construct a good argument" I'ma stop you there. Very few can construct a good argument in this case because very few can construct a good argument, period. Congratulations, you noticed that normies aren't academics. But in this case, the heuristic works.

As I said before, the shop teacher thing wasn't about self-expression or liberation. It was intented to be grotesquely humiliating for everyone involved, almost certainly at the direction of a hidden third party. To make ideological excuses for it is to be complict in the abuse. It's about the same kind of juvenile opposition as holding your hand in your brother's face saying "I'm not touching you! I'm not touching you!" Plus the sexual thrill of risking/expecting/demanding punishment, of course.

There are concentric rings of cope around that, but...

This () seems to be the source of that statistic. But here's the full line:

> We estimate that free-ranging domestic cats kill 1.3–4.0 billion birds and 6.3–22.3 billion mammals annually.

1) For 'mammals' read RATS AND MICE. (https://t.co/xAvcj71Evr) https://t.co/2kEe5RCvcCnature.com/articles/ncomm…
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Pest…
2) Cats don't kill eagles or other raptors.

3) Cat-hating disguised as prissy moralism is an ideal way to Acshually in an edgy way, but also a number of influential conservation biologists seem to genuinely desire cat genocide, and design studies to justify it. Weird as hell.

What, only two? 20th century "Science" tried copy an institutional blueprint that developed within the disciplines of physics and chemistry and turn it into a factory for creating all types of knowledge.

At this point, it seems increasingly clear that this failed, and it was almost all fraud.

Spotted on the timeline:

"Excitable conservatives should think carefully about which they prefer: a world of small farms producing high-quality food... or the continuation of a fragile, globalised food system in hock to giant corporations." Would you prefer:
- Ideology 1 (kawaii, totally rad, will get you laid), or
- Ideology 2 (basically made of poison and devils)

I mean good job writing a thesis statement that lets me dismiss the essay, the author and the publication immediately.

Interesting story, but I'm QTing to note how difficult Twitter makes it to read stuff like this. (In Tweetdeck but web is similar.)

1) Click image
2) Click 'View original'
3) Click image
4) Right-click, 'Open image in new tab'
5) Hand-edit 'name=large' to 'name=orig' in URL. You can shorten the process by right-clicking at step 2; the 'view original' button does nothing but waste your time.

This is a gobsmacking rewrite of history. "The rule-makers America has relied on since its founding" fuck off, go over there and fuck off some more, keep fucking off until you come back here and then choke on this bag of dicks and fuck off Invaders warn of dire consequences should their eternal and historic rule (instituted last year, resistance movement still shelling the capital, countryside uncontrolled) be threatened. The fucking audacity.

Mmm, yes and no. I think there are subtleties involved that are irreducibly unparseable for most people. It's certainly true that, eg, an uncomfortably large swath of the intellectual ultra-elite were franky pro-diddling as recently as the 1970s. And Hollywood is founded on it. There's sort of an 80-20 (really a 99-1) principle here; the overwhelming majority of people in whatever political faction you want would never dream of abusing a child like that, but there aren't a lot of reasons for seeking hyperelite status, and most of them are vile.
