According to Wale Edun, Nigeria's Finance Minister, a massive foreign exchange (FX) inflow of $10 billion is expected in the coming weeks.

🔍 Let's dive into what this FX windfall means for businesses and investors.

1/14 When this money arrives, Nigeria's foreign reserves will gradually increase, confirming receipt of the funds.

However, the reserves won't rise in absolute terms by the full $10 billion.

Just yesterday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the postponement of the 2023 Governorship and State Assembly Elections, causing a further delay for Nigerians anticipating the polls.

Here’s why the postponement is taking place 🧵 The elections, previously scheduled for March 11th, were rescheduled by one week to March 18th, 2023, due to legal issues concerning the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). 2/8

Neither Atiku’s nor Tinubu’s manifesto inspires confidence that either candidate can steer Nigeria in the right direction.

Are things different with Peter Obi’s manifesto? Let’s find out!

THREAD
#StearsManifestoWeek 1/11 Let's start with electricity, every Nigerian's pain point.

The LP power sector plans are structured according to the sections of the electricity value chain: generation, transmission, distribution, and a bonus section for financing.

Peter Obi, seems to be the best option for giving Nigeria the direction and energy it needs, but he also has the smallest chance of winning.

#StearsPremiumToday
bit.ly/3VWomvy We say Peter Obi has the smallest chance of becoming president among the top parties (APC, PDP & LP) because the Labour Party is trying to do something not done so far in Nigerian politics: Win the presidency without holding a single governorship and almost zero legislative seats

The CBN came out with another one of its surprise announcements yesterday.

The apex bank introduced a policy that limits over-the-counter cash withdrawals from commercial banks to ₦100,000 (c. $225) for individuals & ₦200,000 (c. $451) for businesses per week.

THREAD 1/16 Image This announcement has stirred an uproar across social media with questions like: “What are the reasons behind this new policy?” and “Is this to aid financial inclusion or target politicians?”

The World Bank estimates that 45% of Nigerians don’t have access to electricity from the grid. That’s 99 million people.

APC & PDP have promised to solve this problem if elected. But which of them is better placed to give 🇳🇬 24HRs electricity?

Since 2015, Nigeria has been in the top 10 of the most terrorised countries in the world. Atiku plans to solve this insecurity problem by hiring 1 million police officers, while Tinubu wants to ‘recharge’ Lake Chad.

Who has a more effective plan?

THREAD
#StearsManifestoWeek 1/8 There is a likely consensus that Nigeria is under-policed, but both presidential candidates view the solution differently.

According to his manifesto, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) plans to achieve a 10% GDP growth rate for Nigeria over the next four years, if elected.

What is the possibility and implication of this growth plan?

THREAD 1/5
#StearsManifestoWeek First, Tinubu’s growth plan is audacious, given the current state of the economy. Since 2014, the Nigerian economy hasn’t achieved an annual growth above 4%.

However, this ambition comes at a price. Image

Nigeria’s Liquified Natural Gas company (NLNG) has declared Force Majeure.

So what does this mean for Nigerians? We have answers for you.

THREAD 1/16 By declaring force majeure, NLNG is saying that it cannot supply LNG to customers it has contracts with due to unforeseen circumstances (the flooding in Nigeria).

But NLNG has been going through it since last year.

🙆🏾‍♀️ The ₦20 trillion 2023 budget has a deficit of over ₦10 trillion!
This means the gap between FG’s expenses and revenue, which grew 4x larger between 2015 and 2021, will further expand.
This got us thinking:

Why does Nigeria’s revenue growth keep slowing down?

THREAD 1/8 First, the Federal Government mainly earns from oil and non-oil.

Since the 1980s, crude oil revenue has provided a more significant chunk of the federal government’s revenue. 2016 and 2019 were the only exceptions.

We’ve taken a holistic look at the President’s impact on the Nigerian economy.

It’s official—the NNPC hasn’t remitted oil revenue to the government in 6 months.

Worse, the NNPC’s subsidy expenditure has hit ₦1.593 trillion, surpassing 2021’s ₦1.573 trillion.

THREAD 1/19 It’s no secret that Nigeria doesn’t benefit from high oil prices. Comparing Saudi Arabia’s national oil company, Aramco, to NNPC isn’t exactly fair, but we can’t help but notice that Aramco made $48 billion in profits ($500 million per day) in just Q2 2022!

🚗 Gas-powered vehicles - D
📡 Internet infrastructure - C

This week, crude oil prices dropped below $100/barrel for the first time since April. 📉

What’s happening, and should we expect a decline in diesel prices? ⛽️

First, some context on the global oil market.

1/15 The high prices are caused by high oil demand over supply.

As countries lifted pandemic lockdown restrictions in 2021, oil producers like Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Russia were slow to increase oil supplies due to fears that another lockdown would happen.

Lagos @followlasg is, without exception, the commercial giant of Nigeria, but it is also the second least liveable city in the world (for the 3rd time in a row).

Second only to Syria’s war-torn city, Damascus.

A thread to make it make sense.

1/11 When you consider all the sources of a state’s revenue:

- Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)
- Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC)
- Capital imports

Lagos is top in Nigeria. But living conditions in the city are worsening.

No, Nigeria can't afford to borrow more because, in the end, only one thing matters when it comes to debt.

Will you be able to pay back when the time comes?

Going by this, 🇳🇬's debt is unsustainable as paying back is becoming more & more difficult, and we’ll show you why:

1/18 What does the debt-to-GDP ratio tell us?

Nigeria’s current debt to GDP ratio is currently 22%, far less than the @IMFNews's recommendation of 35%, and much less than international counterparts.

Four days ago, Nigeria’s electricity grid collapsed again.

This meant that the available energy dropped to 9 MW which is barely enough to power a large estate like VGC.

Yes, that bad.

If you are tired of wondering why the grid continues to collapse, keep reading. ⚡

1/13 The major cause of grid collapse is grid instability.

This happens when electricity demand does not equal electricity supply.
