Following the appalling violent attack on author Salman Rushdie, today's Daily Mail asks "What's the difference between an Islamist fundamentalist and a trans rights extremist?", suggesting that "Where crushing free speech is concerned, they are very much on the same page"

The year that #StopFundingHate launched in 2016, there were over 100 anti-migrant front pages across UK newspapers - most especially in the Sun, Daily Mail and Express. 1/
Together we've shown that when enough of us speak out, advertisers will respond - and it can make a real difference. In recent years, there's been a marked reduction in anti-migrant UK front pages. #StopFundingHate works: thedrum.com/news/2019/08/0… /2
Earlier this year Stop Funding Hate was the subject of a complaint to the CIC Regulator, alleging that our work was in breach of the law and amounted to “political” activity. This allegation was wholly unfounded and we are pleased to confirm that it has not been upheld. /1
Self-evidently, #StopFundingHate’s work seeking to persuade private companies not to advertise with toxic media does not fall under the definition of “political” activity outlined in the CIC rules here: legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2005/1788…

@Axelisys@coopuk .@CoopUK have been among the most prolific funders of toxic media that we've seen, despite the overwhelming vote for Responsible Advertising at the 2018 AGM. Coop claim to want to be "anti-racist in all we do" but their advertising tells a different story. blog.coop.co.uk/2020/09/24/our…@Axelisys@coopuk Our volunteers haven't reported any Coop ads on GB News this week, but based on their public statements we expect @CoopUK to be advertising again on GB News soon, notwithstanding this issue: newsweek.com/trump-russia-j…

If you're a @Discovery customer, staff member or shareholder, you may be surprised to learn that they are a major investor in GB News #DontFundGBNewsdeadline.com/2020/09/gb-new…
So @Discovery talk about "bringing the world a little closer together" & say that "We stand for equity, inclusion, and mutual respect". How do they square this with investing in a TV channel accused of "opening the gates of hell" on transphobia? pinknews.co.uk/2021/06/23/ind…

Our friends @slpng_giants_fr are facing legal threats from two notoriously toxic news outlets following the massive success of their campaign to defund hateful media in France.
But you can't sue an idea - and the campaign to make hate unprofitable is now a global movement... /1
CNews & Valeurs Actuelles may not like it, but the companies we shop with care what their customers think. And the public has every right to speak out & urge brands to stop advertising with these toxic channels... /2 huffingtonpost.co.uk/richard-wilson…

If you've wondered why the UK news industry has such a problem with institutional racism, it's worth remembering that the industry's Editors Code guidelines have a whole section spelling out that comparing African migrants to "cockroaches" is acceptable: editorscode.org.uk/downloads/code…
The UK news industry has specifically gone out of its way to ensure that articles which are "discriminatory against gay people in general, autistic people in general or transgender people in general" are permitted under its "Editors' Code": ipso.co.uk/news-press-rel…

#StopFundingHate has had a *lot* of requests to help identify any companies advertising on GB News. We have a brilliant team of research volunteers ready to go, and will be sharing advertiser info under the #DontFundGBNews hashtag when the channel launches standard.co.uk/insider/gb-new…
Concerns over the threat of "Fox News style" media standards being imposed in Britain have been exacerbated by reports of a plan to install ex-Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre as chair of Ofcom: theguardian.com/media/2021/jan…
Did you know that the "anti-woke" media narrative is regularly promoted by the Russian Government's notorious international propaganda channel RT? It's perhaps worth reflecting on why they might be so keen to push this...
More examples of the Russian Government's international channel RT pushing the "anti woke" narrative:

Supporters of GB News keep claiming that it will be Britain's first "anti woke" channel - but actually RT (run by the Russian government but broadcasting on Freeview in the UK) have been pushing out this kind of messaging for quite a while now...
The Russian Government's international propaganda channel RT certainly do seem keen on this "anti woke" theme...

A quick update on #GBNews... A number of people have asked if we have any info on the advertisers who'll be supporting this controversial channel....
The latest we've seen is that the GB News launch date has *still* not been confirmed. In the meantime #StopFundingHate has been developing a system to help track & identify as many advertisers as possible from the first day that GB News starts broadcasting...

In his acclaimed book "Flat Earth News", Nick Davies published a shocking account of the scale of institutional racism at the Daily Mail: books.google.co.uk/books?id=U2E79…
Davies noted: "I have never come across a reporter from the Daily Mail who did not have some similar story, of black people being excluded from the paper because of their colour" books.google.co.uk/books?id=U2E79…
