HSE PCR Testing News

Very interesting news.

Very substantial PCR test availability back in the system.

14th 22338
15th 21139
16th 19985

As you know, the HSE had reduced availability to 12k a day. It's back up higher than recent weeks, despite PCR testing not being available for the majority of the population.

Hard to know why. Perhaps they are anticipating significant rises in cases of the remaining groups to be tested.

Perhaps they plan to reopen PCR testing to more

I see the much anticipated "peak" has been dropped as an idea by NPHET. Now it's just maybe happening according to modelling (which no real epidemiologists believe) and will be a long drawn out affair anyway.

Network scientists have a name for that. it's called an S curve. It normally is used to describe an idea or product adoption curve, where adoption starts very slow, and then accelerates till everyone regularly adopts the product.

here the product is covid, and government have essentially handed it the market.

As you may know I've been tracking PCR testing closely for the last 7/8 weeks.

I want to make this very clear.

There is no general self-referral HSE PCR testing system in this country anymore.

The HSE offers just 12-13k test appointments in 12 counties ... ...to a small group of citizens who have a positive antigen test (despite high false negative rates), who are not aged 4-39, or who are healthcare workers.

Despite this, all available appointments book out rapidly just after release at midnight across most of the country.

We really have to hit this nail of the head: omicron is less severe so it will be all right.

Lets take the extreme new claim. 70% less severe.Lets believe it for a moment.

so if 100 cases was delivering 10 hospitalisations, not it's only delivering 3. Here is the problem.

omicron grows the number of cases, doubling every 2 days.

So after 4 days you have 400 cases.

3% of 400 is 12.

So you have more cases that with the original strain.

HSE PCR Test Availability Report

This is the worst day on record.

Just 220 left in Donegal. These will run out shortly.

The average wait time for a PCR test is now in excess of 2 days across the country.

About 3,000 appointments/hr are being missed.

gets worse tomorrow. for reference

What I've learned during covid.

There is a very thin line between optimism and denial, and most people seem to cross it regularly. The "optimist" looks at this graph, for example, and says "at least there is availability in donegal".

The realist looks at the optimist and wonder what is he smoking?

HSE PCR Test availability

You are not seeing things. There is no mistake.

No availability till Friday anywhere except Donegal which is running out also.

I knew it was collapsing but the scale of this collapse for anyone who has watched this data for the last few weeks is ... ...is hard to express.

What it means essentially, is that about 20,000 additional test appointments are needed to capture the DAILY test requirement.

Some 32,000 appointments were made today by people looking for appointments today, having largely to settle for tomorrow.

HSE PCR Test Appointment availability

The graphs are back, because availability has once again collapsed.

This is omicron. Dublin has about 13 appointments left fro Thursday. for reference

HSE PCR Appointments are being booked at the rate of about 2500 an hour.

Nothing left today/tomorrow in Dublin, Meath or Wicklow. Will run out shortly in Laois, Louth, Kerry, Kilkenny, Kildare, Waterford, Tipperary, Wexford.

It's back where it was before schools masked up. Assuming an 18% positivity, that's an additional 450 positive cases an hour right now. The numerate amongst you will notice that this would give a ballpark case rate of 10k a day from self-referenced testing. Very rough obviously, but perhaps a scale guide.

Just 16500 in the HSE booking system for Wednesday.

ongoing reduction in provision of appointments, include just 3500 for Wednesday, a reduction of 600-900 a day over prior weeks.

They are having a laugh. 3500 for Wednesday in dublin I should add.

Afternoon all. If you need a PCR test, and aren't in somewhere like Roscommon, where weirdly there are 710 appintments available tomorrow???

It's Tuesday folks A remarkable 3371 of the 4784 appointments for Tuesday left are in Donegal, Galway, Mayon and Roscommon, where they simply won't be used.

Is that why they're being offered? Because they don't have to staff them?

Would this guy do that? 😉

So case in class here. Kid home sick on Wednesday. confirmed infected today, presumably from test on Friday given the 48 hour wait. Infectious on Mon/Tue since symptomatic Wednesday. Told about 7 kids coughing Thu/Fri,right on time.

Another bloody cluster could have been avoided There is no chance that this cluster will be recorded as such. The parents of these children will struggle to get appointments for testing by Tuesday.

forget about it.

Evening all

HSE PCR test availability

it seems to be important to keep doing this, because I've seen an increasing number who seems to think HSE case rates are a reliable guide of case rates. Image They aren't. They aren't even a good indicator for trend as the problem of availability is getting worse as the HSE reduce availability further still (meaning both that more people are looking for tests every day, AND that the HSE are reducing the appointments available to book)
