A quick 🧵 on

"low case-fatality-ratio" and "mildness" of Omicron.

The graphs below on the number of deaths should give everyone declaring the
"pandemic over" and
"omicron is mild"

time to reflect on ⬆️ in "mild deaths"

@Parents_Utd @dgurdasani1 @jburnmurdoch

🇬🇧👇 👆In the UK "Mild Omicron" has been killing more than 1700/wk most of January much higher than the more "severe Delta".

Death has come down but still above 1000/wk > delta death since Jul

In the US it is worse due to lower vaccination rate
killing more than 16,000/wk

🧵Thanks @DrAmirKhanGP for this.

It's not rocket science:
'allow mixing in an indoor crowded setting without any mitigation' - airborne virus will find its way an infect more individuals

But we choose to ignore this basic science

@SafeEdForAll_UK @Parents_Utd @SGriffin_Lab Also, many including @jneill @dgurdasani1 @chrischirp @ProfColinDavis have started pointing out to this "predictable rise" almost a week ago. ImageImageImageImage

🧵After some delay 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 case numbers for finer age-grp are out today. Even before start of school, they look shocking:

First,

test positivity is above 72% for all age 5-17

i.e. nearly 3 out of 4 tested are +ve

@Parents_Utd @LCKScotland @SafeEdForAll_UK @dgurdasani1 Some may argue this is due to testing bias, but look at the sheer rate of infections even before start of term

Some are equivalent to the peak autumn infection levels

🧵Today both BBC and Skynews was bragging about the UK strategy of opening up early on 19th of July resulting in a relatively better situation than Germany, Netherlands and Austria - but at what cost?
Look at the cumulative death rate
@Parents_Utd @SafeEdForAll_UK @dgurdasani1 Since 19th July
UK had over 15,000 deaths,
whereas Germany had 7000 deaths
and Netherlands and Australia had around 1200 deaths each

Have we lost all sense of perspective!

HUGE RISE IN hospital admission in children in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.
👉3 age groups each showing the highest level of hospital admissions in the whole pandemic
👉 All moving ↗️ - a result of the huge number of cases we had over the last month.
@Parents_Utd @dgurdasani1 @SafeEdForAll_UK 2/

Age 12-17 -> 5 times the previous peak in Feb
Age 5-11 -> 3 times the previous peak in Feb

All increasing at a very fast rate.

Zooming in on the more recent time starting from 3 admissions in May we are now at 42 admissions between 2-17
