There's another abortion case at the Supreme Court on Wednesday. This one hasn't gotten as much attention as the abortion pill suit, but it's even more terrifying: Alliance Defending Freedom is pushing fetal personhood on behalf of a U.S. state
susanrinkunas.com/us-v-idaho-emt… The case essentially comes down to: Are pregnant women who show up in ERs people or mere vessels for potential life? As one brief notes, if the court rules for Idaho, it "will succeed in demoting pregnant women to second-class status under EMTALA."

The Supreme Court took another abortion case, but the real threat is the media narrative. SCOTUS will likely swat the case away on standing grounds, earning headlines about “protecting abortion.” But a GOP president could still enact a national ban in 2025
jezebel.com/abortion-acces… That kind of press coverage will be weaponized by politicians who want to act like abortion won’t be banned if people vote for Republicans, or stay home. It’s Trump saying “there’s nothing happening there” re: Amy Coney Barrett all over again

the agency. However, there is a threat in terms of media narrative. This case gives the Court a chance to look reasonable by ruling in favor of the FDA in a decision that would come out in the lead-up to a crucial election. Such a ruling could get the Court headlines that claim they "protected abortion" and "showed moderation," when all they really did was smack down a meritless lawsuit on standing grounds-and didn't rule on the underlying arguments of the case about whether the FDA properly approved the drug and later updates to the label. That kind of coverage could se...
Just think back to Donald Trump saying in a September 2020 debate that Joe Biden was wrong to note that then-nominee Amy Coney Barrett could gut Roe. "It's not on the ballot; there is nothing happening there," he proclaimed. "You don't know her view on Roe v. Wade." Abortion access is absolutely on the ballot. The next GOP president could ban abortion pills without this lawsuit, and without Congress, by simply enforcing the Comstock Act, a law from 1873 that's never been repealed. (And if Trump gets elected, he'd absolutely have on his Supreme Court shortlist a judge lik...

Alito trying to prebut a forthcoming ProPublica story is only going to result in insane traffic on said story Alito previously gave WSJ a whiny interview and the paper seemed very worried in April 2022 that Roberts would go soft in Dobbs. Gee I wonder where that info came from?

Beautiful to see this support for laid off Vice union workers who haven't gotten severance, but I must note that @shanesmith30 could fund the Tier 3 goal of $50,000 all by himself.

NEW: The Nebraska teenager charged for allegedly taking abortion pills that her mom ordered has plead guilty to one felony and faces up to two years in prison. Her mom faces up to eight
jezebel.com/nebraska-teen-… Celeste Burgess was 17 and her mother allegedly helped her end her pregnancy in April 2022—months before Roe was overturned. They're both facing prison time. This is Purvi Patel plus Jennifer Whalen, and it's going to happen more often.

if you'd like to send a chill down your spine: Even before he announces, Ron DeSantis is openly thirsting for a 7-2 Supreme Court he could create during an 8-year term
washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/… and yes DeSantis took a shot at John Roberts: "If you replace a Clarence Thomas with somebody like a Roberts or somebody like that, then you’re gonna actually see the court move to the left, and you can’t do that.”

North Carolina Republicans worked on their ban in secret. Nebraska lawmakers attached theirs to a gender-affirming care bill. and two South Carolina Republican women got glowing headlines last weekend for blocking a near total ban—they’re now set to pass a six week ban. And in North Carolina there is of course the Tricia Cotham of it all

The common thread: republicans have to lie, cheat, and obfuscate to pass unpopular abortion bans

I've run multiple marathons and always thought it was insane that Kyrsten Sinema has trained for 26.2 mile races while she's supposed to be serving the residents of Arizona. Now we learn that she's using campaign funds to travel to the events!

NEW: Why did pro-choice North Carolina Rep. Tricia Cotham vote to ban abortion? A former Cotham adviser believes it wasn't a genuine change in beliefs or even a payoff, but her insistence that Democrats were mean to her. "She will always be the victim"
jezebel.com/angry-ex-staff… It's hard to explain Cotham's abortion flip. Jezebel obtained her @PPSATNC questionnaire—she pledged to oppose anti-abortion bills. But the "entitled" former rep skipped multiple endorsement interviews. PP didn't endorse and Cotham said they "screwed” her

NEW: North Carolina Rep. Tricia Cotham has given pro-abortion speeches and said in January she wanted to codify Roe, so why did she just vote for an abortion ban? It may have to do with her extensive ties to charter schools
jezebel.com/north-carolina… In the 5 years before she was elected, Cotham was a lobbyist representing multiple charter school interests. In January—when she was still a Dem—the GOP made her an education committee co-chair. They were 1 vote shy of supermajority so this raised eyebrows

The North Carolina state rep who switched parties to be a Republican just voted yes on a 12-week abortion ban. Trisha Cotham co-sponsored a bill to codify Roe *earlier this year*

The WGA screenwriters are on strike for a fair contract and this tweet perfectly encapsulates how all writers—and all workers—are in the same fight. Our bosses may be different but it's the same struggle. #WGAStrong My fellow online media workers will probably relate to this one. People who will applaud the Supreme Court for this abortion pill decision? Actually, you do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to them.
jezebel.com/supreme-court-… To be clear, the justices should have dismissed this absolutely bogus case entirely. Instead, Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas wrote they would have let the restrictions take effect. The abortion pill mifepristone is safe tonight, but not for long

NEW: A $500 donation Matthew Kacsmaryk made to Josh Hawley in 2018 has been scrubbed from @OpenSecretsDC. Hawley's wife Erin argued the abortion pill case in front of Kacsmaryk. Hawley joined an amicus brief in the case.
jezebel.com/lets-look-at-s… Kacsmaryk's donation still appears on the FEC's site.

Missouri Senate Candidate @LucasKunceMO told Jezebel that Senators shouldn't be allowed to vote on judicial nominees who donated to them—or to lobby on court cases benefitting an immediate relative.
