@DanielRosetti4 @QueenMab87 If Dr. Brett doesn’t mind, I’ll try to expand in a few tweets to find the commonality of what we’re saying.

The foundational cornerstone of European antisemitism is antisemitism. But the foundational cornerstone of American white supremacy is anti-Blackness. @DanielRosetti4 @QueenMab87 This obviously creates a system of absurdity. What is white supremacy? What is white?

In America, “whiteness” is a legal category and always has been, and both Dr. Brett and I are therefore white. Our whiteness would have determined where we sat on the bus, what (cont)

An educational thread on why Christians need to stop using 'Pharisee' as a pejorative or a slur. Much of what I'm going to say here owes a great debt to people like Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg and JSX, long gone from this site. But I wanted to compile much of what has been said into one thread that can be a solid, easy refutation to when people encounter this issue in the wild, both Christians and Jews. So without further ado let's delve into this persistent form of antisemitism.

"How can those with a non-affirming position on LGBTQ people love them?" "How do we form respectful dialogue with those with a traditional sexual ethic?"

You've probably heard this question, and I want to talk about it. But first, imagine if this question was about the Jews. "But Ephraim, those things are CLEARLY very different!" Well, for me they aren't. I'm a gay Jew. These things are both essentially intertwined for me and many, many others.

Now imagine someone coming to me in tears, hoping to dialogue after huge amounts of prayer and study.

It’s #HolocaustMemorialDay and I can’t let this day go by without commemorating the six million of our people who were taken from us by white Christian supremacy, fascism, and nationalism. A loss so profound that we needed to create a new word -genocide- to describe it. It’s #HolocaustMemorialDay and I can’t let this day go by without commemorating the Porajmos, the Nazi destruction of the Roma and Sinti, the theft of 500,000-1 million Romani lives, and the pain of my Romani family, friends, and neighbors.

One of the reasons it’s so difficult to work in dismantling antisemitism in Christian/Jewish relationships is that as soon as I takk about the material harm it does, someone responses that I’m not talking about real/true/faithful Christianity.

And it stops the conversation. Some Christians will treat “well, that wasn’t REAL Christianity” as if it’s some unassailable rhetorical point. And then, they refuse to listen further, because obviously I’m now talking to REAL Christians, and therefore addressing the wrong people.

Coming out of Shabbat early because it’s a shitty shitty world. It’s also not a world that needs my pithy statements or condemnations of violence against any civilians anywhere, and besides my opinions haven’t changed. My support for Palestinian liberation and justice hasn’t changed, my disgust for the occupation, siege, and ever-growing apartheid hasn’t changed, my desire for autonomy and freedom for the Jewish people that doesn’t depend on the theft of life and land hasn’t changed.

There’s actually a third category between monotheism and idolatry that many, if not most, Jews believe that Christians fall into. It’s called shituf. A quick thread. Shituf means ‘association,’ and it refers to religious practices that are not pure monotheism, but also not straight-up polytheistic. Many of Christianity’s doctrinal practices (the Trinity, Marian and saint veneration, symbology, etc.) are polytheistic to Jews.

I had a little bit of time to consider the 'is Christianity inherently antisemitic?' question during Yom Kippur. Only a bit, most was devoted towards my love for my people and my empty stomach. But enough to make a thread about it. Is Christianity inherently antisemitic? Much depends on your definition of Christianity. And the way that Christians define Christianity is very different to how Jews, or even most non-Christians would.

So @Natgrace79 boosted and praised efforts by @ZachWLambert and @ZaackHunt to raise money for a Christian nationalist who hates Jews and loves Hitler, and I’m the dishonest one? Let’s go. Receipts only. Image Who the man is and what he says: love for Hitler, violence against Jews, the death penalty for queer people, mocking the six million

Since antisemitism is woven into every facet of Christianity, written in every page of its history, infused in every expression of its theology, it’s likely that even well-meaning Xtians will express it frequently, not just once or twice.

It’s how you learn from it that matters. Deconstructing the antisemitism of Christianity without throwing the whole religion in the bin will be a lifelong process. It’s not a matter of expunging a few words and phrases from your vocabulary. It’s changing the essence of how you engage with your entire religion.

It’s not evidence of deeply-held antisemitism to casually use the phrase ‘a pound of flesh,’ or to quote St. John Chrysostom, or criticize Israel’s oppressive systems.

But to hurl all three out in quick succession specifically because you’re having an argument with Jews? That is definitely a pattern. Especially when that pattern is backed up with a habit of expecting Jews in particular to perform Christianity and Christian values.
