What do we know about Brittney Griner at this point?
Right now she’s in pre-trial detention as law enforcement continues its investigation.
Next scheduled hearing is 5/19. Experts say there’s a good chance the period will be extended again; suspects can be held for a year. /1 US officials say they have not had access to her, but people close to Griner (let’s say PCTG) say they get updates from her Russian legal teams and know she’s “OK,” but not exactly “good.” /2

There’s little information on Griner’s situation, but experts I’ve spoken to (like Tom Firestone, former DOJ legal advisor to US Embassy in Moscow, who joined me on air) say she’s teetering between two legal paths. /1 The first is the Russian legal system. It’s better for her if this remains a legal case, with a Russian attorney helping to limit her legal jeopardy. But the other path is the political one. My friend Jim Fisher died of Covid on Sunday. You know how you're lucky if you have one teacher in your life who shows you what you can be and changes you forever?
