THREAD. A limitation in the current transgender athlete debate is the lack of longitudinal data on actual trans athletes who have transitioned. A common argument is that trained trans women would lose more muscle mass/strength than the so far studied untrained population. 1/6
MRI data suggest that in very trained, men have at least 30% more leg muscle mass than women. Thus, the drop in muscle mass with T suppression would have to average 20% to compare with females. This is an extraordinary figure compared with the typical 5% seen in untrained. 2/6
