Taiwan History: Opium made up 74% of #British imports to Taiwan in the late 1800’s as seen by these figures from the ports of Takao 打狗 Kaohsiung & Tamshui 淡水. When #Japan took over Taiwan in 1895 there were possibly over 167,000 #opium addicts in #Taiwan. #DrugAbuse #history
Japanese considered opium smoking as one of the "Three Vices" along with foot binding & the queue hairstyle that needed to be abolished in Taiwan. They were so successful in reducing opium usage that they ended up with excess production that they started exporting to #China
