I'm unusually in possession of Saturday's Scottish edition of The Times. For those who aren't regular Times readers a summary of the articles & letters concerning Scotland:
1. The Union Chain Bridge spanning the Tweed granted international recognition in the form of a plaque. 2. East Lothian teenager remanded in custody after discovery of £125k of cannabis.
3. £1.2m worth o ching recovered from a van on the M74 in South Lanarkshire at Abington. Northbound so perhaps from Beattock, Lockerbie or Ecclefechan? The Times does not speculate on the origins.

Meet Alister Jack. When Alister isn’t manning the thin blue line stopping illegal soft toys entering fortress Britain, he’s the tory candidate for Dumfries & Galloway. I’ve been holding his record as MP up to the light trying to make something out. This won’t take long: /1 Alister Jack standing with a miniature stop sign next to a pile of soft cuddly toy dogs in front of a van with the back door open and caged dogs inside. I’ll confess, when I started looking at this, I found myself upgrading my opinion of Mundell a fraction of a millimetre. You'll see what I mean. Join me as I wander through Jack’s Hansard record. /2 Alister Jack and Mundell striking absurd thumbs up poses wearing blue tory rosettes

Q: How do you measure the contribution of an MP? In his glossy election promo video David Mundell invites the electorate of Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale to judge him on his record. His 14 year record as MP including 4 years as a cabinet minister. Let's take a look: /1 2 stills from Mundell's promo vid. He's sitting in the countryside in his constituency. The subtitles read Raising matters in the house is not the only measurement of the contribution of an MP of course but it is quantifiable. Let's see what important matters David's been talking about in the House of Commons with regards to, say, the main population centres in his constituency. /2

For my sins I watched this:
Brief summary to follow /1 The primary apparatus for "strengthening the union" is a branding exercise ie shoving a union jack on everything. Their logic is that everything is funded directly or indirectly by the treasury inc Scottish Government infrastructure projects so that should be UK branded too /2

Here's what Ofcom, the UK communications regulator said about the improvement of broadband coverage in Scotland since the Scottish Government took on delivery of this devolved area:
(short thread- bear with me) /1 Ofcom infrastructure report 2014:
“Scotland and Wales continue to have the lowest coverage, although they have seen the largest increases since last year.”

Ofcom Connected Nations report 2015:
“Coverage has improved most in Scotland and Wales, as a result of investment in new and upgraded networks by industry and governments”

Ofcom Connected Nations report 2016:
“The greatest increase was in Scotland, with a year-o Now – this is all great news if you live in Scotland and have access to superfast broadband but meaningless if you still do not.

Remember- Scotland is big and sparsely populated. And has loads of islands & mountains. It is clearly the hardest country in the UK to hook up. /2

I find it quite remarkable the barrage of "UK Government in Scotland" I receive through vast expense from the public purse (all classed as Scottish spending in GERS).
It has some reach. Here's some examples: /2 A classic example- the subsidy junkie tweet. 10 retweets and 9,561 views Tweet

I have read a lot of rubbish about the superfast-broadband roll out tonight. Fluffy is blaming the Scottish Government, the SNP blaming UK and Kirstene Hair wants the UK to take over delivery of superfast broadband, even though telecommunications is reserved. But who is right? (please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). 1. pro-indy tweeters are correct- telecommunications is reserved and the UK government is responsible. However. Back in 2013 superfast broadband, delivered solely on commercial grounds was crap for rural UK & needed urgent investment
