How do you put multiple optics in a row and align them so that their optical axes agree? This is a thread where I show you how I build a compact Alignment Laser Assembly– the companion to my "Alignment Crane" from a few months ago:
2/34 First, the parts. I’ll detail each part needed in each section, but here are the basic components needed for:
- the alignment laser assembly
- alignment readout tools
- mirrors for alignment laser steering
- tools for assembly

1/? I've had a few people ask me why I prefer @Thorlabs posts over their cages. The argument for cages is self-defeating: supposedly they provide pre-aligned centration, but mechanical tolerances =/= optical tolerances. You end up having to put everything on kinematic mounts...
2/?...so why use cages? Not to mention that any inclusion of dichroic mirrors in your light path means that you do not actually want centration. You again end up having to displace your optics from the mechanically-defined center. So again, why use cages?
