🧵Something to consider with the Knicks that may not be but also could be super important: the 2023-24 luxury tax.

Assume:

1) Spida package = Rose + Fournier + ~5-6 1sts

2) Randle stays/is traded for matching $ that isn't expiring

3) Cam stays

That's a lot of 2023-24 tax $ You may be thinking "It's Dolan's money, who cares?" and you'd be right. However, when a team pays the tax 3/4 years, they become a repeat tax team. The financial penalties are harsh and could impact how the Knicks are able to operate as they'd move from good to great

🧵OK, I have a theory. I don't know if the Knicks will wind up able to do it, but the math checks out.

You know the report of a potential Reggie Bullock S&T? It's possible that it was for Jalen Brunson but I don't think it was. I think the Knicks are trying to create a TPE (1/9) For those who don't know, a Traded Player Exception (TPE) is a way for over-the-cap teams to exceed the salary cap. Last year, Boston "traded" Gordon Hayward into Charlotte's cap space and received a big TPE. They could then absorb salary without needing trades to match (2/9)

More like KenKnick Nunn

I'm sorry Terrible pun aside, this could open the door for Nunn to sign with the Knicks.

The obstacle in place for teams was signing Nunn to an offer sheet on August 6th. The Heat would have 48 hours to match. Knowing P** R****, he would have made a decision at the 11th hour

With Taj coming back, the Knicks now project to have 14 players on the roster. They have some cap space to sign someone else, which would mean 15 players. But they also have the room exception at their disposal that they would hopefully use on someone. So we have a problem (1/2) Let's see if this ages like milk but prediction:

Knicks S&T for a PG and send out Knox + Vildoza, getting them back to 14 players. Then they give the 15th roster spot to the player taking the room exception. And finally, they use their two two-way deals on Pinson and Sims (2/2)

🧵 Knicks need to use their remaining $ on a player signed for multiple years since they'll be over the cap. Will need as much future salary possible for trades.

FO will also want a PG. Rose hasn't played 60+ games since 2017. IQ's 21. Deuce is a rookie. Vildoza isn't a starter Before I continue, slight correction: IQ's 22. This is why you should always double check your research smh.

Anyways, back to the regularly scheduled programming...

Ok...

Once the Knicks use up all of their cap space, they are eligible for the room exception, worth $4.9M.

Knicks are ineligible to receive the tax MLE ($5.9M) because they're not a tax team, nor can they get the non-tax MLE ($9.5M) because they used cap space NY has Rose's early bird rights. If they keep his rights, the most they can offer is 175% of his contract last year. That's $13.4M.

If the Knicks renounce his rights, they can sign him up to the max. Note: not the max, UP TO the max.

There is a discrepancy with the reported #
