On July 1, MGNREGA formally ceased to exist, bringing to a close one of independent India's most consequential social welfare programmes. Its legacy, and the questions it raised about rights and the state's obligations, will continue to shape debates on work in rural India. 🧵 Governments of every political dispensation have sought to hollow out India’s rural employment guarantee scheme. Only a mass movement that keeps the vulnerable at its centre can make the MGNREGA what it is supposed to be.
