Even @Haqiqatjou premise in the beginning is flawed. Hafez al-Assad didn’t lose the Golan Heights. He consolidated power after effectively abandoning it. There’s long been speculation he allowed Israel to seize it in 1967 to eliminate rivals and secure his path to power.
