In 1627, Iceland was raided by Barbary pirates, an event called the “Turkish abductions.”
A book was written by one of the captives, Ólafur Egilsson, describing the dramatic raids and his fascinating journey to Algiers and back. I'll give a brief summary in this thread.
The book was written by Ólafur Egilsson, an Icelandic Lutheran reverend in his sixties.
In these raids, a total of almost 400 Icelanders were captured and about 50 killed. Ólafur, his wife, and his two sons were among the captives.
