I want to use my spaceflight to uplift and shine a spotlight on my home state of West Virginia.

If space travel were a pagent - my platform would be the Mountain State!

I've worked to find some incredible WV teachers and I'm hoping you'll help me clear their wish lists 👇 Here's my friend Therese!

- she moved to West Virginia from the Philippines
- both her and her husband are science teachers
- teaches 7th grade science in Summers County
- has worked a local STEM camp in WV for the last 4 years

The way that much of the public reacted to OceanGate was unsettling. The dehumanizing and trivializing of human life was incredibly off putting.

Yes, we know why the jokes were made. People are fed up with income inequality. Infuriated at the contrast b/n OceanGate and Greece. But I want to share a quote that summarized why it was so unsettling from @emilyinurphone over on Insta. She says “the world is a cruel place and rallying around the death of a perceived enemy is a way to build community and inure yourself against your own suffering…. (1/2)

Yesterday I took down my posts about how @TSA treated me at @flyLAXairport. I was embarrassed at how emotional I was. I was anxious about the confrontation. So I deleted it.

But they make too many mothers feel this way, so I’m going to talk about it bc this needs to stop 🧵 Here’s what happened. Yesterday was my 1st trip away from my 10wk old son, who I’m currently breastfeeding. I’m going through security at LAX. I brought my pump and 2 ice packs - only 1 of which was cold (I won’t need the other until I come home, when I’ll have more milk).

This Mother’s Day I want rights over my own body.
The decision (likely to be) made by the Supreme Court has been yrs in the making.
When I was pregnant, we could slowly see this playing out. & let me tell you, it’s pretty awful being pregnant and having pro life family members
🧵 It’s awful knowing that they would prefer you die if it meant that your pregnancy might ultimately end up w/ a birth. Every blood test/scan is terrifying regardless, but especially so when you know that certainly family members prioritized that fertilized embryo over your life.

I wanted to share one way our family is donating money to create change in politics in case there's anyone else interested in doing the same.

We're donating to key Senate races to flip the Senate to Blue.

Here's an overview... 53/100 Senate seats are currently held by Republicans.

Alabama, which is currently held by a Dem is likely to go to a Republican.

This makes 54/100 expected seats Republican.

A local news station in West Virginia is interviewing my parents about Emily's Wonder Lab soon and they are SO NERVOUS.

They called me to practice their answers and my mom was taking notes and they rearranged the entire living room to get a nice background. 🥺they are SO cute update, my mom said my dad was so excited that she could barely get a word in and also my dad almost started crying but was mostly able to compose himself.

😭♥️ I can't wait to see this interview

I HAVE A NETFLIX SHOW (!!!)

Emily's Wonder Lab premieres on @Netflix on August 25th! This project is...a dream come true.

There’s no other way to put it. I cried like a baby when I got the call that Netflix wanted to work with me.
Sharing my love of science with kids...on @NETFLIX?
a DREAM.

And did I mention that I was 9 months pregnant when I filmed it?

Today we celebrate Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova. She was the first and youngest woman to launch into space (age 26) on a *solo* mission on Vostok 6 on 16 June 1963. Image The first two women in space were from the Soviet Union!

It's awesome that SU/Russia worked early on to break down this barrier for women.

You'd think that many of their cosmonauts since would be women!

You'd be wrong.

Only 4 out of ~122 Cosmonauts have been women 😑

There's going to be a lot of white people here stepping their toes into activism for the first time.

It's good for us to remember that many BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) individuals have used their platforms for activism for far longer than we've been listening. So the first step is to listen before posting. I saw a protest sign that said "this isn't a wake up call - the alarm has been going off for a long time - you've just been hitting snooze."

Trump is using @NASA & @SpaceX's accomplishment (which was set in motion way before he came around) as a Trump campaign ad and as a way to distract from the BLM movement right now. A friend who works at SpaceX sent me this petition. Signing means you agree that it is wrong to use this accomplishment in this way. They said 100+ SpaceX'ers have already signed it. Hope you'll join me in signing it too.

To non-Black followers currently overwhelmed with the number of anti-racist resources to choose from - start small and build from there. Choose 2-3 things to do *right now*

also,
Have you heard of the jam study? The jam study was done by psychologists in 2000 and showed that more options isn't always better.

One day shoppers were presented with 24 different types of jam. Another day, shoppers were only presented with 6 different types of jam.

Reminder, you're watching the first rocket with humans on it leave the US in nearly a decade.

Perhaps more importantly, this is the first private spacecraft to carry humans to orbit - EVER.

Why is today's launch such a big deal?

🚀It's the first launch to the ISS from US soil in nearly a decade

🚀It's the first crewed launch to orbit from a private spacecraft

#LaunchAmerica Why did it take so long to get here?

Mix of "space is hard" program delays - but also, this program wasn't funded properly in the beginning. Not everyone thought this was a great idea initially. Image
