On Thursday, the new city’s civilian oversight board passed a new general order that eliminates the Chicago Police Department’s controversial gang database during a special public meeting at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Pilsen.

In addition to getting rid of the department’s old gang database, any future CPD database would require full approval from the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability (CCPSA) before it is implemented.

On this day, July 25, 1941, Emmett Till was born in Chicago. He would have been 82 years old today.
In 1955, at the age of 14, Till was kidnapped, tortured and brutally murdered for allegedly flirting with a white woman named Carolyn Bryant in Mississippi.
Today, President Joe Biden signed a National Monument Proclamation to honor the life of Emmett Till and the brave advocacy of his mother Mamie Till-Mobley. twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…

On Friday, a coalition of community-based orgs filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) due to the City’s plans to turn public housing land into a training facility for the Chicago Fire soccer team.
The plaintiffs include the Coalition to Protect CHA Land, the Chicago Housing Initiative and the Lugenia Burns Hope Center.
The lawsuit alleges that the plan violates CHA’s fair housing obligations, and they’re asking for a temporary restraining order and permanent injunction.

Media has routinely referred to the influx of asylum seekers as a “migrant crisis.” But that phrase is not very accurate. Read more: thetriibe.com/2023/05/suppor…

Johnson’s inauguration begins at 10:30 a.m at the Credit Union 1 Arena (formerly the UIC Pavilion). His historic term comes after he knocked out former mayor Lori Lightfoot in February’s primary election.
🧵 At 3:00 p.m. today, Mayor Lightfoot will give a farewell address from BUILD, an anti-violence group headquartered in Austin on Chicago's West Side.
Check back for updates in this thread.
More on BUILD:
BUILD is a nationally respected gang intervention, violence prevention, and youth development organization based on Chicago’s West Side. Since 1969, the group has worked to save lives and mentor young people.
Kim Foxx, who led efforts to reform the Cook County State’s Attorney Office, will not seek a third term in 2024.
She was swept into office in 2016 after activists’ #ByeAnita campaign helped oust her predecessor.
Foxx’s work around bail reform, wrongful convictions, and exonerations can be applauded led to a reduction in incarceration and were historic.
Today Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Ald. Emma Mitts (37th) and other city officials unveiled the new multi-million dollar public safety training center (cop academy) for first responders, including police, fire, and paramedics in West Humboldt Park.
Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony comes just days after an as-yet-unnamed officer or officers shot and killed activist Manuel Esteban Paez Terán.
Terán and other activists were protesting Georgia’s cop city, a training facility being built near Atlanta. theguardian.com/us-news/2023/j…

NEW - Chicagoans have been promised police reform before, and the department’s entrenched attitude against change could make some wonder how effective the district councils will be.
One clue to the power they may wield lies in who’s on the ballot. thetriibe.com/2023/01/2023-c…
Over the next two months, voters will elect 66 people to serve on police district councils across the city.
In addition to ordinary residents and dedicated activists, several candidates with law enforcement ties are running. thetriibe.com/2023/01/2023-c…

Without any executive political experience, some Chicago voters wonder how Ja'Mal Green will bring his lofty ideas to fruition.
The CWB Chicago used a tweet we posted yesterday afternoon about police district vacancies over the weekend to suggest that Black “crime-ridden” neighborhoods do not care about police accountability.
We see the not so subtle racism in the framing of this post.
FYI, the filing results were updated yesterday evening and the majority of the slots in Black and brown neighborhoods now have several candidates running in them.
We are working on an update with the full results.

Today is the final day to file to run for office in Chicago's 2023 municipal election. Although many police districts do not have enough candidates to fill their open positions.
What happens if no one runs for the newly-created police District Councils?
As of 12:56 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, no candidates had filed to run in the 1st District. That area covers parts of the Loop and South Loop.
Additionally, fewer than three candidates have filed to run in 11 districts, which are predominately Black and brown neighborhoods:
I’m outside the Thompson Center for a press conference where city council members and community members are calling on Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the Chicago city council to fund the memorial for Chicago police torture survivors.
It’s been seven years since the historic passage of the reparations legislation for Jon Burge torture survivors.
Around 9:15 a.m., Mayor Lightfoot will join Governor Pritzker, Cook County Board President Preckwinkle and more to provide an update on the United Center mass vaccination site.
Gov. Pritzker's daily coronavirus briefing will begin soon. Keep in mind:
** Yesterday, he reported the loss of an infant to COVID-19.
** Also, yesterday there were 3,491 cases + 47 deaths across Illinois.
In the meantime, Abbott Labs — based in Lake County, IL — will be releasing a new COVID-test that will yield positive results within 5 minutes, and negative results in 13 minutes.
