Watching fascism in real time via my Instagram feed. What a time to be alive. Image What's awesome about having this tweet do numbers is all the apologists for authoritarianism jumping in to show me screenshots of what they insist are gay sex manuals being distributed to elementary kids age and saying "see? This is why we need to crack down." Just awesome.

Let's stop awarding the presidency of major professional orgs to senior big-name scholars at "elite" universities like it's the lifetime achievement award for the local Rotary Club. /1 In every historical org I belong to, the election slate is determined by a nominations committee, and I can't remember an occasion where more than one name has been on the ballot for either president or president-elect. Thus these positions are not really chosen by the members./2

I am sure the author of this piece intended to emphasize the eagerness and acuity with which their inmate students approach learning. But holy hell this piece is a mess, and in our current climate, maybe saying college should emulate aspects of prison is not the best strategy Most prison educators: college education is at least one way we can make these barbaric carceral institutions slightly more human

This op-ed: lol whatever college students should be like prisoners, under a stifling discipline that makes them desperate for any humanity whatsoever

Good morning to everyone seeing MLK Day as an opportunity for reflection and critique. If you're tired of just hearing that one line from that one speech thrown at you by people who would absolutely have liked James Earl Ray more than MLK in 1968, check these things out: 🧵🧵 My favorite collection of King's works, with a great introduction/meditation by Cornel West: bookshop.org/p/books/the-ra…

The CEO of Southwest Airlines has a compensation package that pays about 9 million dollars a year. (dallasnews.com/business/airli…) That's about 69 times the average salary for a Southwest employee. I guess we know where all the money that could have been used for a computer infrastructure upgrade went.

The last campus I visited before covid was Cazenovia, where I facilitated some workshops and convos with admin and faculty about blended/online learning. They had a great group of folks, doing good work under v challenging circumstances. I mourn this news.
chronicle.com/article/citing… It was hard to be a small private college even before covid. Now, it's brutal. Most of us are not Wellesley or Vassar. Most privates are like Caz--mostly tuition-dependent, lean staffing, working hard on retention and student success without the necessary resources to do so.

I'm old enough to remember the post-Romney "soul-searching" in the wake of 2012. There was a lengthy report that basically said Republicans should stop being xenophobic pricks, which the party mainstream interpreted as "stop being Republicans" and then they memory-holed it all. LOL good times

Stop positing this (artificial and inaccurate) binary as the starting point for your takes on classroom discussions. It's a caricature of what "DEI advocates" are saying, and it's white-people straw-manning to the nth degree.
chronicle.com/article/how-to… Image Like, what do you mean by "robust dialogue?" Because I don't know a single "DEI advocate" who's against that. You know who usually is? Fragile white folks who think being called racist is the worst crime imaginable.

So the Right has found its shiny object of the day, and it's the old canard that the Constitution, in particular the 3/5 compromise, was "well, actually" antislavery...*abolitionist* even. And that the US was an antislavery nation from the Revolution forward. *deep sigh* 🧵 Image First off, I wrote a rebuttal to this specious argument back in 2015 (!). Thanks to @thejuntoblog for publishing it in their pages. /2

A fairly useful article, but what it's most useful for is to demonstrate just how unequipped centrist/moderate/"classical liberal" discourse is to confront the reality of living in a society becoming increasingly authoritarian, w a white fascism problem. chronicle.com/article/the-el… We're not gonna class-discussion our way out of fascism. Now, creating a critically reflective environment where students can be sure they're recognized as full human beings will help, in that it creates a space to shape a better future via genuine consciousness-raising.

Summing up: the President of my professional organization used his monthly column to give us a half-assed, poorly-written, evidence-challenged screed that justifiably pissed off a wide swath of the membership. The essay's original tweet got ratioed into oblivion (1/x) 2/ Then, after what I can only presume was an avalanche of responses pointing out his misogynoir, condescending tone, lack of actual evidence, and the profound offense he gave to BIPOC scholars among others, he issued a superficially OK but substance-free apology. My September Perspectives on History column has generated an
