Uri Feibesch zu Bacharach (Rothschild) is the earliest known Rothschild that is documented based on his social status. He was born between 1435 and 1445. He fathered 3 sons, one being Elchanan zur Rose Bacharach (Rothschild) born in 1496, who had 2 sons himself. His eldest son Isaak Elchanan Bacharach (Rothschild) born in 1528 all lived in the same ghetto from the times of their births until their deaths in modern day Frankfurt, Germany.

Isaak later changed his last name to Rothschild due to the common practice in the Frankfurt ghetto where he lived. In the late 18th century, the Holy Roman Empire began requiring Jews to adopt surnames for administrative purposes. This was part of a broader trend across Europe where bureaucratic states needed last names for taxation, military conscription, and other civic responsibilities.

Jews just seen this as a great opportunity to deceive and to integrate more into European society, they felt adopting a surname was a way to conform to “societal norms” and reduce discrimination. Many chose names that sounded German or were derived from German words, deceiving the Germans as if they were actually from Germany.

The Frankfurt ghetto had been established in 1462 by the intervention of Emperor Frederick III; the first known members of the family (Elchanan Bacharach onward)  lived on No. 69 in a house called zum Rot(h)en Schild (German for "Red Shield" though the name “Rothschild” means Red Coat, as in coat-of-arms, in the Yiddish language). In the Frankfurt area, houses were designated not by numbers but by signs with different symbols or colors.
