You are probably aware by now that ASHA has proposed to remove “culture, language, and dialect” from the anti-discrimination clauses of the Code of Ethics for the profession. Their explanation is that “these concepts are already covered under…the term ‘national origin.’” They cite the US Dept of Labor and the Dept of Justice as justification, as statements from these divisions explicitly describe discrimination based on national origin as including discrimination based on language, accent, and culture.

When I was an undergrad at a PWI, I had a white man write a letter of recommendation for me - I don’t remember for what. He was so proud of that letter, he sent it to me after he submitted it. In that letter, he told the story of one of our first interactions… At a pre-orientation program, some upper classmen did a skit. At the end of the skit, they threw water on the audience. They did this skit every year, but this was the first time there was a group of Black students sitting right in the middle…
