Adam Olearius (1603-1671)

Olearius, German scholar of Persian literature, was in 1630s Muscovy as secretary to the Duke of Holstein’s ambassador. As usual, his descriptions will sound familiar… “No people in the world have a greater veneration for their Prince than the Muscovites, who from their infancy are taught to speak of the Czar as of God himself, not only in their acts and public assemblies but also in their entertainments and ordinary discourse.” (Olearius 1656)

Karel Havlíček Borovský (1821-1856)

Czech journalist Borovský lived in russia from 1842-44. He went there as a Pan-Slavist. He did not leave as one. (1/15) Borovský really, really wanted to like russia. He intended to write only positive things about it. Letters written during his stay document his growing disillusionment; his later commentaries are lacerating. (2/15)

Fletcher was Queen Elizabeth I of England’s ambassador to Muscovy. He witnessed the founding of the Moscow Patriarchate in 1589. He was NOT impressed... (1/11) The official Kremlin position in 1589 was that Patriarch Jeremias II of Constantinople had arrived to transfer all his powers to Moscow, and to make Moscow the new capital of the entire Orthodox world. 18th century Scottish poet Robert Burns hated Catherine the Great of Russia so much, in 1792 he wrote an obscene poem hoping that the Devil would fuck her in the ass with a huge metal dildo in hell.
