1/ If the 25th Amendment isn’t invoked, what will Trump do next? (THREAD)
2/ TS Eliot famously said that the world will end “not with a bang, but a whimper.” It’s also how strongman dictator reigns typically end, and Trump is no exception. He’s having his “Downfall bunker moment,” and it could be very dangerous.
3/ Meanwhile, the nation is discovering that large swaths of the Republican Party, from senior elected officials to media figures to working class people, are filled with neoNazi fascists, psychopaths, and gullible but well-armed conspiracy nuts, all egged-on by social media.

1/ The Republican coronavirus relief negotiating position, over the past six months, tells you everything you need to know about why the modern GOP is so corrupt it needs to be rebuilt from the ground up or die. (THREAD)
2/ First, Democrats in the House of Representatives passed the HEROES Act, with $3 trillion for unemployed Americans, small businesses, and state and local governments. Republicans said that was too much money for average Americans, and refused to even hold a vote in the Senate.
3/ Mitch McConnell refused to even hold a debate on the HEROES Act for months, so Democrats in the House of Representatives gave them a compromise $2 trillion bill with a lot less money for unemployed people, but Republicans again said it was too much money for average Americans.

1/ Americans must drive a stake through the heart of the NeoCalvinist Republican Party. (THREAD)
2/ Once again, negotiations over Covid relief show the stark differences between the Democratic and Republican Parties. That America isn’t shocked and horrified by GOP behavior is a testimonial to how well corporate media obscures these differences.
3/ Several Republican senators and their aides have gone so far as to suggest that giving working people even a single $600 check will cause them to “live high on the hog“ or will bring “communism“ to America.

1/ Mitch McConnell wants to let corporations kill you without consequence. (THREAD)
2/ Probably the most under-reported story of the year has been how Mitch McConnell is holding Americans hostage in exchange for letting big corporations kill Americans without any consequence.
3/ Mitch took you and me hostage back in May, when the House of Representatives passed the HEROES act that would have funded state and local governments and provided unemployed workers with an ongoing weekly payment.

1/ Rebuilding trust in democracy and our American government requires both holding seditious Republicans accountable and restoring the protective functions of government. Here’s what Democrats must do and why. (THREAD)
2/ The reason tens of millions of Americans don’t believe Joe Biden won the election is a 40-year betrayal of the American public’s trust by Republican politicians, grifters, and con artists exploiting the once-good name of Lincoln‘s Party.
3/ Science, religion, and conspiracy theories are all, essentially the same thing: systems or attempts to explain the unknown, to make sense out of things beyond our senses or immediate, touchable reality. Thus, our vulnerability to con artists like Trump.

1/ It’s time to defund the GOP. In yesterday‘s rant, I laid out all the reasons why Democrats should put at the top of their priority list “defunding the Republican Party.“ Here’s a little background, and how to do it. (THREAD)
2/ Back in 1981, the Republican Party decided to defund the Democratic Party. While the Republican party had principally been funded by rich people and big business since the 1920s, the Democrats were largely reliant on the labor unions.
3/ So Ronald Reagan, as part of his “Reagan Revolution,“ figured the best way to destroy the Democratic Party was to destroy America’s unions. His first shot was to destroy Patco, the air traffic controller‘s union, and he did it in less than a week in August, 1981.

2/ Politicians in New York State are discussing making Covid vaccination mandatory, and, predictably, Republican cultists are freaking out. “Freedom!“ they scream as they run around maskless, assaulting their fellow citizens with virus-laden breath.
3/ GOP cultists claim that vaccine manufacturers are participating in mind control experiments and public health measures are “un-American,” while we are dying from the highest rates of Covid infection and death in the developed world.

1/ When will America wake up to the evil that has seized the Republican Party?
2/ We’ve seen it around the world and throughout history: when a political party or government exists solely to serve the very wealthy, and begins to lose power, they inevitably turn to authoritarianism and police violence.
3/ We saw this in Florida when Gov. Ron DeSantis sent State police with guns drawn to intimidate the family of whistleblower Rebekah Jones, who he’d earlier fired for refusing to lie about Florida coronavirus statistics and is publishing a daily “Florida coronavirus dashboard.“

1/ What most vividly shows the difference between Ron DeSantis and Xavier Becerra? The crusade, and then the failure of that crusade, to make America into a fully authoritarian nation, and the return to democracy.
2/ Donald Trump is a full-blown authoritarian; anyone who’s ever read a decent history of Germany, Italy, or Spain in the 1930s, or knows the history of Pinochet in Chile, knows this is an irrefutable truth.
3/ But authoritarians don’t come to power by themselves; they have helpers. Ron DeSantis, a helper, bet that if he could cover up Covid deaths and misery in Florida, it would keep Trump in the White House and solidify DeSantis’ authoritarian political future as a “made man.”

1/ The GOP has been running a con job and grift on the American people for 40 years, and now Trump has added his own new and very profitable twist to it. He’s not going to let go of it any day soon.
2/ The Washington Post headline reads: “Trump raises $495 million since mid-October, including a massive haul fueled by misleading appeals about election.” He’s raised over $140 million just since he lost the election!
3/ The headline over at Raw Story today reads: “A mysterious company created 9 months ago is the RNC’s highest paid vendor of the 2020 election.” Nobody knows who the company is, what they do, or who owns it, but it took $49 million from donors to the RNC.

1/ How do we prevent the next grifter-in-chief and stop Congress from enabling criminals in government?
2/ Trump and McConnell are both pushing pardons. Trump wants pardons for his criminal cronies, enablers, and children. McConnell wants pardons for meat packing plants and corporate criminals.
3/ Although past presidents have had family members working for them - Attorney General Bobby Kennedy is a famous example - none have ever had to pardon their family members for criminal activity in the White House. Until Trump.

1/ Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans are proposing to let employers injure or even kill their workers and bring back the three-martini lunch...in exchange for one measly month of extended unemployment benefits.
2/ Senate Republicans are trying to sabotage both the incoming Biden administration and screw working people by refusing to extend expanded unemployment benefits in Mitch McConnell‘s new “stimulus“; it does, however, make it illegal for workers to sue their employers.
3/ It’s been six months since the House of Representatives passed the $3 trillion Heroes act that gave jobless people $600 a week, and more than two months since they passed a slimmed-down $2.2 trillion version that gave only $300 a week. But the GOP said no to both.

1/ Florida governor Ron DeSantis says that he won’t put into place a mask mandate because people in blue states that have used mask mandates are still getting infected. His logic is extraordinary; let’s extend it.
2/ All across the northern American states today, people are wearing coats, gloves, scarves and hats as they go outdoors. Yet only around 1330 Americans die of hypothermia every year, and almost all of those people were wearing coats, gloves, scarves and/or hats!
3/ And the majority of people who die of hypothermia we’re not only wearing warm clothing, they also had pre-existing conditions! That must be the real cause that they died, right? Those 1300 death certificates must be wrong!

1/ Fascists and oligarchs within the Republican Party are already beginning preparations to steal the 2024 presidential election. Trump, it turns out, was just a dry run for them.
2/ Their allies in the media are coming together, too. This weekend a Fox & Friends host suggested that Trump shouldn’t have to go through the courts to stay President; Republicans in swing state legislatures should simply award their state’s electors to him.
3/ Fascists often, in the beginning, are idealists. They just think that things need to be more orderly and tidy, and that a small number of very smart, very wealthy people need to be in charge to ensure social and political stability. And it always ends the same way: in tragedy.

2/ Donald Trump‘s treason extends far beyond his efforts to damage Americans belief in our form of government, our elected democratic republic, that Trump’s oligarch buddies in Saudi Arabia, Russia and China also regularly disparage.
3/ Trump’s also actively damaging the ability of the incoming Biden administration to aid Americans during the Trump Depression, and to get the virus in check. In this, he has help from Steve Mnuchin and Mitch McConnell.

1/ The GOP is no longer a legitimate political party: it’s a cult. It’s becoming increasingly clear to Americans that the Republican Party only stands for one thing: the privilege and power of wealthy white men.
2/ Over the last 40 years they have devised increasingly byzantine rules to prevent low income whites and people of color from voting and are now trying to outright throw out ballots in Detroit, Philadelphia and Atlanta.
3/ They’ve worked for decades, at both the state and federal level, to make it harder for women, particularly low income women, to get access to birth control, women’s health services, and abortion.

1/ America is confronting a crisis like we haven’t seen since 1930, and, just as happened during the Republican Great Depression (yes, that’s what they called it in the 1930s), the GOP is committed to making it worse.
2/ The Republican Party’s latest 2020 scam gives Trump a tiny chance of hanging onto the White House while doing massive, permanent damage to American democracy and, as if they consider it a bonus, kneecaping and, in some cases, killing working class and poor Americans.
3/ Covid diagnoses & deaths are exploding across the country; millions of Americans will lose unemployment benefits, eviction protection, & a pause in student loan payments the week after Christmas; & all Mitch McConnell will do is push through more unqualified rightwing judges.

1/ It turns out that Donald Trump was right: the election was rigged. He would know, of course, because he and Lewis DeJoy were the ones who rigged it.
2/ Historically “conservative“ (e.g. “white racist”) efforts to rig the vote were almost entirely focused on preventing people of color from voting. For a century, this involved literacy tests, guessing the number of jellybeans in a jar, and other low-tech, blatant strategies.
3/ In the 1960s, William Rehnquist and friends launched “Operation Eagle Eye“ in the Southwest where they would send “poll watchers“ to threaten and intimidate Native American, Hispanic and Black voters.
