Apple's visionOS significantly limits how applications are allowed to interact with the user, especially re: their new gaze-based input, and I think it's worth talking about.

TL;DR: If you want to do AR apps, you must give Apple full rendering control. 🧵 A lot of it centers around Apple's choice to both make eye tracking central to the headsets input, and simultaneously declare it to be too private to be exposed to apps. (Which, to be fair, it's pretty sensitive data.)

The WWDC session about Safari in VR is available now.

developer.apple.com/videos/play/ww… Not gonna lie, I'm not thrilled about the fact that they're redefining how highlighting works for HTML elements. This is apparently so they can use gaze as a cursor without the page being able to infer where you're looking at all times.

So you've seen the goofy VR Walmart video floating around today, right? It's easy to make fun of it because, well, it's terrible and nobody should build anything like this. But... if you WERE to find yourself implementing a VR shopping app, how could you make it not suck? So first off, it's worth noting that the video linked is not new, and it's not indicative of and actual product in development.

My son has recently discovered The Lion King, and as a result I've watched it WAY too much in the past few weeks. But that's also caused me to notice something, so let's talk about Scar for a moment. If you're not familiar with the movie (what rock did you live under?) Scar is a lion, perfectly voiced by Jeremy Irons, who claims the position of king after murdering his brother and attempting to murder his nephew. Watching the movie in 2018, though, he feels... familiar.

I keep my Twitter posts minimally political, but you'll have to excuse me for a second while I address something near to my heart: Adoption. If you don't know, I'm the adoptive father of two beautiful boys and I can honestly say they are the best part of my life.
