Joseph Collins, an Alsip man with clear ties to the Proud Boys, was charged with a hate crime after allegedly vandalizing UpRising Bakery and Cafe in Lake in the Hills earlier this month.
chicago.suntimes.com/crime/2022/7/3… Collins has been photographed wearing Proud Boys garb and standing alongside Edgar “Remy Del Toro” Delatorre, a prominent member of the neofascist group. Both men were present for the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, which has led to federal charges against dozens of Proud Boys.

Starting a running thread with stories about the hacked city emails that were posted online by @DDoSecret. First, here’s our primer:
chicago.suntimes.com/city-hall/2021… Last Thursday, a day before the publicly city acknowledged the hack, @SouthSideWeekly @jimdaleywrites published this story about Lightfoot’s behind-the-scenes lobbying for qualified immunity.

Since there’s some renewed interest in the Proud Boys, I’m going to highlight some members operating in and around the Chicago area. First up is Brien James, a former klansman who started the American Guard and leads the Indiana Proud Boys.
splcenter.org/fighting-hate/… James was among the white nationalist crew that joined a downtown rally against Kim Foxx last year. Here’s James chatting with Chicago FOP Prez John Catanzara at the rally. Image

I'm over at the Thompson Center, where Gov. Pritzker will be talking about "ensuring fairness when awarding conditional adult-use cannabis dispensary licenses." Here's my story from yesterday.
chicago.suntimes.com/cannabis/2020/… After going thru priorities of legalization law, Pritzker says his admin has heard for weeks "that more needs to be done to ensure fairness" in the cannabis industry and application process. Reiterates what's outlined in the linked story above.

I’m headed to the Thompson Center to cover multiple press conferences dealing with the state’s decision to whittle down 700+ applicants for new pot shop licenses to just 21 groups who will be included in a lottery to determine the winners. Congressmen Danny Davis and Chuy Garcia and state Rep. La Shawn Ford are expected to speak about the “rigged” lottery at one of them. Image

Protesters and community members confronted Kenosha cops searching a van near 63rd St. and 20th Ave. Cops ultimately left after taking one man into custody. The van, which folks on scene said is being used to feed demonstrators, was allowed to drive away. Image Just after police left, a group came marching through the area. Clyde McLemore, founder of the Lake County chapter of Black Lives Matter, said the plan is to march for the two ppl shot and killed two nights ago.

I’m in Pilsen, where CPS students are planning a dance party protest in front of the home of a school board member they say hasn’t committed to voting cops out of schools. A DJ is getting set up and snacks have been laid out. Image The planned protest comes just hours after the Tribune reported cops are enforcing an ordinance that prohibits neighborhood demonstrations as they look to protect the mayor and her home from protesters.

Here's @jus10chi stellar reporting from the weekend:
blockclubchicago.org/2020/08/17/at-… India Jackson, of Good Kids Mad City, told reporters that protesters were left "“running for our lives” when officers apparently attempted to confine the group in a small area. This video, viewed nearly 320K times, appears to show that moment.

I’m here at the 2nd District station where a phalanx of officers are guarding the door a day after a violent Loop protest. Activists nearby are hanging in the grass, dancing and handing out water and coffee. ImageImage During a nationally televised interview Sunday morning, Lightfoot blamed Saturday’s violence on people who came to the protest “for a fight.” Around the same time, cops released video of a violent clash that broke out.

Friendly reminder that CPD has used facial recognition technology for years, though the department dumped one controversial company that’s been sued by the ACLU. That firm, Clearview AI, uses tech that compares images with billions of photos from the web.
chicago.suntimes.com/crime/2020/1/2… That contract was cut off after civil libertarians and journalists raised serious concerns about the tech. But CPD has used DataWorks Plus for much longer. That program compares suspect images to a mugshot database.

Trevian Kutti served as R. Kelly’s publicist until 2018 and has since worked with Kanye. Now she’s lobbying for a Canadian weed firm hoping to move into Illinois and drawing criticism for attacking the state’s top pot official, who she’s called a “slave.”
chicago.suntimes.com/cannabis/2020/… While both women are black, Kutti has also vowed on social media to “keep my knee on Toi W. Hutchinson’s neck,” accusing Pritzker’s chief pot adviser of stealing “every chance minorities had to access equity and prosperity in cannabis.”

A news conference is about to start across the street from the funeral home in Gresham where 15 were shot on Tuesday. Activists are calling on officials “to end the neglect of Black communities.” Image Activists demanded a range of things during the presser, from a seat at the table in CPS’ reopening discussions to the FCC regulating content on Chicago’s rap radio stations to officials coming together to address violence and the lack of resources in Black neighborhoods.

Should be pointed out that the FOP head is pictured here chatting with Brien James, a known white supremacist who co-founded the Vinlanders Social Club, which the Anti-Defamation League calls "a hardcore racist skinhead gang that has had a high association with violence." The groups' members have been responsible for at least nine murders, according to the ADL. James is now affiliated with the American Guard and the Proud Boys of Indiana. Here's a little background on what happened the day this photo was taken.

“In the 45 years I’ve ministered at St. Sabina, I’ve never felt more hopelessness and despair in the neighborhood as I do right now.”

I’m at CPD HQ where Supt. Brown will he briefing the media after another devastating weekend of violence that left 65 shot, 18 of them fatally. The victims included four children, including three aged 1 to 17 who were killed.

chicago.suntimes.com/crime/2020/6/2… Brown starts by saying, “One of the hardest things we’ll ever encounter is responding to a fatal crime scene that involves children, especially babies.”
