BREAKING / NBC News: Federal prosecutors and the attorney for Rep. Matt Gaetz associate, Joel Greenberg say in court that they expect a plea in his case, @CharlieGileNBC reports.
As we reported last week the investigation into Rep. Gaetz grew out of the Greenberg case last year
@CharlieGileNBC The two parties did not say if there would be a cooperation agreement or plea agreement by Greenberg.
Rep. Matt Gaetz’s name was not said at anytime in the hearing and the whole hearing lasted approximately 6 minutes.
@CharlieGileNBC Greenberg has previously pleaded not guilty to a slew of superseding indictments tied to stalking, illegally obtaining person information, identity theft, wire fraud, and sex trafficking of a minor.
NEW: The FBI has arrested former track and field coach at Northeastern University, Steve Waithe, on wire fraud and cyberstalking charges tied to a scheme where he tried to trick female-athletes into sending him nude or semi-nude photos through fake social media accounts.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston Waithe has been a coach at Penn State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Tennessee and Concordia University Chicago.
NEW: NBC News has confirmed the NY Times reporting that Rep. Matt Gaetz is under federal investigation for possible sex trafficking involving a minor.
The case was developed out of a separate investigation into a local Florida elected official and his sex trafficking case.
That elected official, Joel Micah Greenberg, was just hit with a third superseding indictment which says he obtained and disclosed DMV information for the minor victim Greenberg is alleged to have been involved with sex trafficking.
He faces a slew of other unrelated charges.
There’s an entirely separate investigation into allegations made by Gaetz that he’s the victim of extortion.
The attorney Gaetz says is trying to extort him has told press outlets the allegations of extortion are false.
NEW: Federal prosecutors in New York have hit Ghislaine Maxwell with a superseding indictment which includes two new charges all linked to a 4th victim they say they are now including in the case against her, court documents show.
The alleged conduct occurred from 2001 to 2004.
MORE: According to the superseding indictment the 4th victim was 14 years of age when she was allegedly "groomed" by Maxwell to engage in sex acts with Jeffrey Epstein.
The victim was allegedly paid "hundreds of dollars in cash" after each massage.
MORE: The charges also say that this victim 4 “brought multiple females, including girls under the age of 18, to provide sexualized massages for Epstein at his Palm Beach Residence” and that both victim 4 and the girls she brought were paid hundreds of dollars.
NEW: The suspect in the Atlanta area massage parlor shootings, Robert Aaron Long, is speaking with police and he made an indication that he has sexual addiction issues and "may have frequented some of these places in the past", Cherokee County Sheriff Frank Reynolds says.
MORE: Sheriff Reynolds says the suspect did not indicate that this was a racially motivated shooting.
MORE: Police and deputies were able to track the suspect in the Atlanta area massage parlor shootings by his cell phone which ultimately led to his arrest according to Cherokee Sheriff Frank Reynolds.
NBC News: Out of an abundance of caution the NYPD has deployed Critical Response Command (CRC) units to Asian communities citywide following a series of shooting incidents in Atlanta which could have been directed toward the Asian community.
Meant to add for attribution... According to a NYPD spokesperson.
Several years ago @LesterHoltNBC and I spent some time with CRC learning about their training and their capabilities.
NBC News: The FBI has charged Riley Williams with her role in the Capitol riot.
The FBI says she told a former partner that she intended to take a laptop / hard drive stolen from Pelosi's office, ship it to Russia, where a friend would turn it over to the SVR -- Russian intel.
The FBI says they spoke with Williams’ mother on Saturday and she allegedly said, “she recognized her daughter inside the U.S. Capitol Building and that her daughter had taken a sudden interest in President Trump’s politics and “far right message boards.”
The charging document says, “according to W1, the transfer of the computer device to Russia fell through for unknown reasons and WILLIAMS still has the computer device or destroyed it.”
The FBI agent on the case says the matter remains under investigation.
The head of NYPD's counterterrorism unit says he rejects the notion that what happened at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th was an intelligence failure saying that at this moment the domestic terror threat may be “more dangerous” than the threat of foreign terrorism to the US.
NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence and Counterterroism John Miller, in an interview for the @TODAYshow says, “a lot of people are asking ‘well was this an intelligence failure’, it wasn't an intelligence failure, the intelligence was there.”
@TODAYshow Miller talked about the pre-January 6th intelligence saying, “what we passed on to the Capitol Police was largely tracking with what the Capitol Police and the D.C. police were seeing from other agencies.”
"I authorize you to pursue substantial allegations of voting and vote tabulation irregularities prior to the certification of elections in your jurisdictions in certain cases, as I have already done in specific instances."
NEW: Federal prosecutors acknowledge that dates written on former FBI officials Pete Strozk and Andy McCabe's notes were not written by them.
Instead, they say the dates were estimated dates created by a review team and attached by post-it notes and inadvertently scanned in.
As you may recall, in the past few weeks Strozk and MCabe have raised concerns that dates appeared on their handwritten notes filed in the Flynn case that they say they never wrote.
Today, prosecutors acknowledged they were right, they didn't write in those dates.
The prosecutors say it was FBI agents assigned to the Eastern District of Missouri who attached the dates via post-it note as "estimated dates" and then the documents were scanned at FBI headquarters without taking the post-it notes off first.
NEW: Two notorious political operatives, Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman, have been charged by the Michigan Attorney General in connection with an alleged orchestration of robocalls which the AG's office says was an attempt to suppress the vote.
They each face 4 felony counts.
If convicted the two could face as many as 7 years in prison.
The Michigan AG alleges the calls were orchestrated by the duo in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois “all of which reported similar robocalls being made to residents in their states who live in urban areas with significant minority populations.”
According to the reports Candace told police that Brad has been “depressed and suicidal recently.” The officer added that she said, “this has led him to consume alcohol a lot more frequently and make suicidal statements.”
Police say there is body worn camera of the incident.
NEW: An FBI agent who investigated Flynn recently told the FBI and prosecutors reviewing the Flynn case that he felt Flynn lied to the FBI in his interview to save his job but thought the prosecution of Flynn by Mueller was an effort to “get Trump”, according to a court document.
The agent, identified as William Barnett, apparently told those reviewing the Flynn investigation that the investigation into Manafort, Page, and Papadopoulos were proper because there were investigative angles to follow.
The 13 page interview summary was filed just before midnight tonight by prosecutors seeking to dismiss the case against Flynn.
A dismissal that is being reviewed by the judge who accepted Flynn's initial guilty plea.
NEW: ODNI NCSC Director William Evanina says they believe China prefers that Trump does not win reelection and Russia is trying to denigrate Biden, according to his update on covert and overt influence measures being used by those countries that ODNI has detected.
Evanina says, "many foreign actors have a preference for who wins the election, which they express through a range of overt and private statements; covert influence efforts are rarer. We are primarily concerned about the ongoing and potential activity by China, Russia, and Iran."
MORE: Evanina on Iran's preferences, "we assess that Iran seeks to undermine U.S. democratic institutions, President Trump, and to divide the country in advance of the 2020 elections."
NEW: Federal prosecutors say Ghislaine Maxwell should be held pending trial in part because of her access to foreign trusts and bank accounts as a means to flee, and how she hid in NH (security guards, a cell phone found with tin foil around it) as a way to avoid detection.
Prosecutors say that when they approached the front door of Maxwell’s house on July 2nd they saw her and told her to open the front door. Instead, prosecutors say, she ignored them and went to another room in the house “quickly shutting the door”.
The FBI then had to breach the front door and when they swept the house prosecutors say they found a cell phone wrapped in tin foil.
