On this week's scriptnotes, Mazin said a bad agent/manager is worse than having no representation at all. 100% agree. When I'm giving advice to emerging writers, THIS topic is probably the thing that comes up the most. Thread. 1/x When you're starting out and you're unrepped, landing an agent/manager feels like the impossible dream. And most people won't get the pick of the litter - you'll likely get ONE manager/agent who wants to work with you. So of course you say yes. 2/x

Nobody wants to read your spec. And if they do, nobody wants to actually read all 100+ pages. They badly want to quit after 20. Your job: don’t let them.

If it’s useful, here are 2 super practical things - one for plot, one for character - I always keep in mind. Small thread 1/ Reversal of expectations! Your story’s gotta have twists and turns. Your reader has to think they know where it’s going and then you surprise them. My film prof, the late great Bob Foshko, hammered this so hard I can’t write anything without it. 2/

Since I have a lot of pre-WGA writers in my Twitterverse and it’s the end of the year, I was thinking it might be good to talk about the year-end analysis and next year goals so many of us do and how it relates to your own sanity. Short thread. First off, your writing career is not on an annual calendar. It’s not a tax return. Jan 1st is an arbitrary date. Don’t look at an individual year as an important timeline. Writing careers much like scripts are full of sequences and surprising act breaks.
