Luigi's back pain reminded me of my best friend in college, whose back pain was the first sign that her breast cancer had metastasized into her bones. She was 24 at the time. We were both working at Basys, writing technical manuals on contract to IBM (this was 35 yrs ago)
The pain was horrible, and the radiation and chemotherapy was horrible. Her manager gave her editing she could do at home, but sometimes she couldn't manage even that. Her manager at Basys began to lie. He just marked her timesheet every week—8 hrs, 8 hrs, 8 hrs, 8 hrs, 8 hrs

Ok, here's something I learned in high school humanities: As long as people believe that they have redress for injustice, either through courts or through political action (like voting), the people will choose nonviolent options.

When people become convinced that they have no power to change anything within the system—that's when folks choose violent options. More importantly (since there's always someone around who chooses violence), that's when folks begin to support *other* folks choosing violence
