We are starting our Joint ELSMOR/TANDEM workshop in Brussels. Both are EURATOM-funded research projects into small modular reactors.

Roger Garbil from European Commission gives welcoming words, emphasizing the role of nuclear energy and European R&D efforts. Garbil discusses EURATOM R&D funding topics you can see from the slides. This represents about 10% of European nuclear energy R&D, and is often used by the research organizations as seed for international collaboration.

Ydinenergiaa lähdettiin rakentamaan innolla, mutta syitä miksi sen rakentaminen hiipui oli mm.

1) mopo lähti käsistä ja yritettiin liikaa;
2) energiakriisi loppui kun paremmilla teknologioilla saatiin halpaa fossiilista (tapahtui uudestaan maakaasun kanssa 2000-luvulla);

Nyt koronakriisin jälkihoitoa ennakoidessa on näkynyt vähän samaa kuin viime vuonna ilmastokriisin yhteydessä: jokainen taho julistaa että nyt kun on tosi kyseessä niin juuri heidän suosikkiratkaisuunsa pitää panostaa.

Tämä ei ole viimeinen kriisi. Jos systeemi ei kestä muutaman kuukauden pysähdystä ilman että isoa joukkoa heikommassa asemassa olevia kurmootetaan vielä lisää, niin miten perusteltavissa sen olemassaolo on?

So the German commission on coal exit has reached a recommendation to keep burning coal for the next two decades.

Some news and commentators have said that Macron with this speech has stated a policy for France to move away from nuclear.

Maybe not. Original deal Macron’s precedesor made with the French Greens was for 50% nuclear share by 2025. Now Macron kicks the can 10 years ahead, with little immediate effect. The youngest of 14 oldest currently operating reactors will be 54 year old in 2035. So quite old anyway.

So, a new Ecofys paper on how to stay below 1.5C. And Kees asks to challenge it. Um, I know I'll get a lot of flak for this but Let's Read!

When looking at these scenarios, a few pointers:
Does the plan depend on poor staying poor?
Big role of CCS?
Big role of biomass?
Biased technology options?

At least those are the usual suspects.
